There were a few good things: parking was convenient, the breakfast tasted nice despite the limited choice, most of the staff were kind, and the pub food was tasty. But I wouldn’t stay again. It didn’t feel like good value, with the room, deposit process and fire alarm all contributing to a poor stay. At check-in, I was asked for a £50 deposit on a physical card, even though I’d paid in full online. This was tucked into small print under “view more” on the Booking.com confirmation, so it wasn’t clearly communicated and was easy to miss. I didn’t have a physical card, and I saw several other guests caught off guard by the same requirement. The woman handling my question was condescending and said “most hotels work like this,” which didn’t match my experience or help resolve it. At first I was told I couldn’t check in without a physical card. Only after I mentioned asking for a full refund was Apple Pay authorised. That inconsistency added stress after a long journey. The room was cold, with no thermostat or clear way to adjust the heat. Staff brought an extra duvet and acknowledged the temperature, but it stayed uncomfortable, and showering in the cold room was unpleasant. The hotel was full, so moving rooms wasn’t possible. There were also several visible defects, enough that I took photos on arrival to avoid any problems over the deposit. There was no fridge, the telephone was broken, and the key card kept stopping working whenever I left, so reception had to reactivate it, even when I made a point of keeping it away from my phone. Around 2:30am, the fire alarm went off. Guests seemed to make their own way to the lobby without staff directing or managing things. The person at reception, possibly the manager, stayed on the phone, which made the confusion worse. We weren’t told to go outside, and there was no visible sign of a fire. Nobody explained what was happening for over 20 minutes; only later did we learn it was a false alarm. The lack of clear communication and organisation worried me, especially when thinking about how a real emergency might be handled.

This was my second stay at the Park Hotel, and I spent a week there with my mum. The staff were brilliant, professional, cheerful and so kind to both of us. Everyone we met at reception, in housekeeping, at the bar and restaurant, and in the breakfast room was lovely. Nothing felt like too much trouble, even with my very fussy mum! The foyer looked lovely and festive, and the restaurant food was excellent. They had vegan options for me and non-vegan ones for my mum, so compliments to the Chef. Our rooms were clean and tidy, with comfy beds, a decent shower, TV and coffee essentials. They could use a small upgrade, and a fridge would have been handy. Thanks again, Park Hotel. 10/10, I can’t thank you enough for such a lovely stay. I’ll definitely be back.

We booked our Christmas family meal here last year, in 2024, and the experience was absolutely disgusting. Management promised compensation several times, in the form of meals at the company's sites in Liverpool. It’s now November 2025 and there’s still been nothing. This was the worst service I’ve ever experienced across the board. Don’t be taken in by the nice “please” and “thank you” when you deal with management. Give it a miss.

The rooms are a good size, but the mattresses need replacing in most of them. I stayed for 10 weeks, and every room I used had a mattress fit for the recycling center. Heating only works in a few rooms, and when I told reception, all they did was leave blankets on the bed the next day. I know it’s an old building, but it badly needs some serious routine maintenance.

I went in for a pint on Sunday and asked the barman if I could get some chips with it. He said they were only serving started, and when I tried to explain that the fryer would be the same, he said “the kitchen” couldn’t do it. Fine. A little later, at ten to six, I asked for calamari and was told no because the kitchen closed at 6pm and it would take more than 10 minutes to make. Ridiculous!
