The Alexandra Hotel

It was meant to be just a drink, but we ended up staying the night. I’d read the older reviews, some of which felt almost like performance art, and came away with a different impression. The place is run by hardworking, genuine people whose living depends on doing a good job. Some complaints may have been fair, others seemed theatrical, and the occasional brisk reply doesn’t seem like a hanging offence when running a small hotel is stressful. I had a good look around and found things tidy and comfortable. The proprietor seemed like someone who shows kindness by giving you a bit of ribbing for not knowing how to change a tyre, then teaching you and probably lending a hand. That’s the feel here, no fuss, quietly caring, without the fluff.

Great value for money and a fab location. The staff I spoke to were friendly, and when I needed a hair dryer and toilet roll, they sorted it straight away. The room looked nice and clean when I arrived, though a quick check could have caught the used tissue on the radiator, sanitary towel in the toilet bin and spoon under the bed. The shower was cold to warm on setting 6, then scalding if turned a little hotter. Maybe that’s just how this shower works. I only stayed one night, so didn’t complain. Didn’t use the bar or eat here, so can’t comment on those. The family room is up quite a lot of stairs, but we knew that when booking. I think it’d be perfect for couples, especially with dogs.

We stayed on 17 10 25 and will definitely come back soon. The staff were wonderful on arrival, helping us with our luggage and our dog Sandy, and showing us to the room. The view was fantastic, and the room was clean and quiet overall. Food was reasonably priced with decent portions. Everyone was happy to help, and on our last night we had a lot of fun with the owner and local people, who made us feel very welcome.

Spent a few nights here. The price was great, the bed was comfy and breakfast was lovely. Everyone on staff was really nice, polite and helpful.
