We were shown to our own sofa beside the lovely fire as soon as we came in, which was a nice welcome. The food and service were both excellent, and the manager’s guided tour was an extra treat. We had afternoon tea for Mum’s birthday and definitely thought it was worth a visit. I’m hoping to bring my wife back for an overnight stay.

The rooms are spotless and comfortable, and the staff are so kind that each visit feels like seeing old friends. We’ve stayed three times and keep coming back for the warm, timeless atmosphere and lovely surroundings. In summer, the gardens are breathtaking. There’s a magnificent flower bed of David Austin pedigree roses, including the exquisite Emma Hamilton, and the whole scene feels classically English, elegant and spectacular. Inside, the place has a homely, nostalgic feel, like a haven that gently wraps around you. I hope this rare piece of English heritage can stay just as it is, untouched by modernisation, and be cherished for generations. It’s hard to imagine finding fault with such a unique and heartfelt experience.

The bar could feel more welcoming if the conservatory were opened up with more chairs, giving guests somewhere to meet and chat. It would also help if staff checked the lounge and bar regularly, especially after dinner, to see whether people wanted drinks or snacks. Some of the armchair and sofa seat pads need replacing too. A few have sagged so much that it’s difficult to get out of them. Even with those suggestions, we enjoyed our second stay and would come back. We first stayed in July, and this visit was our second this year. The hotel sits at the end of a long drive in a peaceful, beautiful spot, with spectacular views over rolling countryside. It feels like going back in time, as another reviewer put it, like staying at Downton Abbey. We met several guests who seemed to enjoy the same sort of atmosphere. Our top-floor room was really a large suite, with sofas, armchairs and a beautiful en-suite. The king-sized bed with its topper was very comfortable, and we both slept well. It’s dog friendly, with lovely walks around the grounds. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Ella, who helped carry our bags to the room.

We were made to feel welcome by the friendly staff, and the team stayed attentive even though breakfast was busy. The buffet had a good selection of hot and cold food, and housekeeping even checked whether we’d slept well or needed anything for the room. At dinner, the food was lovely and the service excellent. Nick looked after us especially well. Our room had a sumptuous four poster bed and a beautiful roll top bath, with views out over the countryside. After a busy day, it was a lovely place to relax. The hotel itself is a beautiful period building in Brecon, tucked at the end of a private driveway. Seeing it there really took my breath away. A fabulous stay, and we’re looking forward to returning.

After the proposal, I’d hoped this would be the first wedding venue we visited, so I had high expectations. Instead, we were left disappointed. We waited 40 minutes in reception before anyone saw us, and then the viewing was over in five minutes without us being shown or talked through anything. We didn’t feel welcome, and the whole thing felt rushed. We were told someone would follow up with more information and quotes, but two months later we still haven’t heard anything. If they can’t organise a viewing, we’re left wondering how they’d manage a wedding.
