Alexandra Hotel

The room was a decent size, including the bathroom, and breakfast was very good, with plenty of buffet choices and everything well stocked. The location was ideal for the concert we’d travelled south from the north to see, and the basement room was comfortable overall. It did get quite warm overnight and the fan didn’t seem to work. Not a major issue for us, but it might bother someone else. Noise from neighbouring rooms woke us a few times. The evening receptionist who started at 6pm on the 17th of February told us the main door would be locked at midnight “for protection” and that we wouldn’t be let in if we returned later. He was a young guy in his 20s and spoke rather rudely. We were shocked, since this hadn’t been mentioned on the website or at check-in. At first we thought he was joking, but he was serious. As we’d travelled a long way for the concert, we cut the celebration short and hurried back so we wouldn’t get locked out. It took away from what should have been a special night. At checkout the next morning, we asked another staff member, an older gentleman with glasses, about the rule. He said it wasn’t true and that he’d speak to the evening receptionist. That made it even more frustrating and suggests we’d been given wrong information. Our one-night stay at Alexandra Hotel was mostly positive, but the way this was handled affected the experience significantly. We hope management clarifies the policy and makes sure staff communicate with guests clearly and respectfully.

Being close to Hyde Park was a big part of why this hotel worked so well for me. I could walk to everything I needed, and the location was just what I’d hoped for. Breakfast didn’t have a huge selection, but what was there was fresh and delicious. I felt it was very good value and would happily recommend it.

For what it costs, this place is hard to complain about, especially since it’s listed as a three-star hotel. The location is very convenient, the rooms are decent, the beds and linen were clean, and the tiny toilets worked fine. Free Wi-Fi was a plus, though it kept dropping out, so I sometimes had to do without it. I stayed nearly a week and the floor in my room never seemed to get cleaned. Dust and little bits were there day after day. The walls are thin too, so I could clearly hear people next door talking late into the night, which got annoying. Still, the basics were clean and okay.

The rooms, breakfast, and location were all fine. What put me off was seeing mice running around the lobby. I told the receptionist, and he just said, “I know,” then went back to his phone. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless you’re on a very tight budget.
