Opulence

The room wasn't worth the price, and the stay was very disappointing. We arrived early yesterday in really high temperatures and left our bags while we waited for the room. After our restaurant booking at 7pm, we climbed eight flights of stairs to the top floor, since there’s no lift, and found the electric fan didn’t work. The phone was out of order, so I went back downstairs to reception. They replaced it with a smaller fan, and he insisted on demonstrating how it worked. We then went to shower before heading out, but there were no towels. I had to report that too and wait another ten minutes. The sink tap dripped, the shower water swung from warm to freezing, and the bedding didn’t fit the bed.

The advertising made this place look much better than it is. Maybe it was opulent in the 1980s, but now it needs a major refurbishment and a proper clean. There were holes in the flooring, a dripping tap, and no mattress or pillow protectors, which are basic things you expect. The attic room shouldn’t be used, as the stairs are hazardous when carrying luggage. Staff seem nice at first, but in the morning we were woken by a woman who was rude and had no customer service manner. We had a horrible experience.

The location is excellent, but there’s no air conditioning or lift, and the staff hospitality could be better. I paid over £100 through trip.com. I’m not sure what other hotels are like, but I’d suggest using trusted booking sites and avoiding places like this.

I booked a double room at the last minute for one night. The hotel is in a handy spot, only a few minutes’ walk from Baker Street station, and the room was comfortable. But what I got didn’t remotely resemble the double room in the listing photo. I understand they have several double rooms and they may differ, but there really was no similarity to the picture.
