Red Lion

We had our wedding party in the ballroom last weekend, and I'm so glad we chose the venue. We already enjoyed coming to the pub, but the event itself was amazing. The space was perfect, looked grand on its own and needed very little added. It was also set up perfectly for the band and live music. The food and drinks were great, and Charley and Clio went out of their way to make the night special. They understood exactly what we wanted, and nothing was too much trouble. The whole evening was awesome, and we'd highly recommend the venue. We stayed in the Rooms upstairs too, which were gorgeous and gave us a great space to get ready.

The bright, open room with huge windows made a great impression, and the place feels very modern since its return. We had the Sunday roast, though all three of us are vegetarian, so I can only speak to those options and the service. Both were fantastic. There were plenty of non-alcoholic drinks too. The Bloody Mary could've used more salt, but that's just personal preference. Our server was lovely. We'll be back!

The potatoes let the roast down most: they were pale, dry and barely crisp. The sirloin was just as underwhelming, with little flavour or depth for a 35-day aged cut, and the gravy was thin. At £28, the whole plate felt like an ordinary midweek meal rather than a premium Sunday roast. I'd spent days looking for a proper Sunday roast and picked this place because of all the positive reviews. I arrived with high hopes, which made the disappointment sharper. I expected care and quality for the price, but sadly didn't get either.

The hotel has recently had a high-standard refurbishment, and the upstairs space is a real find in east London. We held our wedding party there this weekend and loved every minute. Charly from Urban weddings was a huge help with organising everything, and Clio, Rayon and the rest of the staff were wonderful. Great pub, venue and hotel, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a distinctive wedding space.
