Breakfast was the biggest letdown for me, especially at £15 per person. There was no hot water for tea, and the pastries seemed pre-packaged, cold and firm. The cooked food was cold to lukewarm, and bacon wasn’t available, with eggs seeming to be the main choice. Staff were mostly absent during service. The decorated napkins were a nice touch, but table service for tea and coffee, a clearer hot breakfast selection and staff being around would make a real difference. Breakfast felt below the price and the standard I’d expect. The room was far too hot overnight. Even with the air-conditioning fan on its highest setting, it made no noticeable difference, and the heat affected my comfort and sleep. Bottled water was a welcome extra, but a fan, ceiling fan or working air-conditioning would have helped. The bedside switches that looked like they controlled the main lights didn’t work. Bedside sockets were low and hidden behind a cabinet, so charging devices was awkward. There were some cleanliness issues too. The bed throw and net curtains had heavy stains, and I found a few stray hairs in the bed. The room was passably clean, but these things let down its appearance. The dark brown desk and wardrobe looked worn, with marks and chips, making the room feel dated and heavy, even if the décor itself didn’t. The Sumner Hotel makes a welcoming first impression, especially at Christmas. The reception team were professional, courteous and genuinely warm, and the festive public areas made for a lovely arrival. Still, several parts of the stay didn’t live up to the advertised four-star rating. The hotel has a pleasant atmosphere and excellent front-of-house service, but the room comfort, cleanliness and breakfast all affected our stay. We’d consider coming back if those issues were addressed.

There was drilling from construction across the street from 8am, which woke us up, though that wasn’t the hotel’s fault. Otherwise, Sumner was great value. Housekeeping kept our room spotless, and the location was fantastic, with The Portman right next door and more pubs and restaurants around Seymour Place. Marble Arch and the Central Line are just three blocks away. I’d recommend it.

We’ve stayed at The Sumner a few times, though our last visit was before the pandemic, and after a few years away it’s still our favourite London hotel. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, and the location makes getting around easy. Oxford Street is only a short walk away, with good pubs and plenty of restaurants nearby. Our room was clean and roomy enough for two, and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast has a good enough spread, whether or not you want a Full English: bread, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, muesli, fruit and croissants are there too. You might not get all that at cheaper chains like Premier Inn or Travelodge. A bit of Marmite would be nice, though. We’ll definitely stay again next time we’re in London.

One of the worst hotel stays I’ve had. I came in the morning, paid, and left my bags there. When I got back at around 9:30 PM, the room was filthy and unhygienic, with red stains on the bed and insects beside it, as shown in the photos. I didn’t stay in the room and asked for my money back right away, but the hotel refused. Be careful if you book here. The room seemed to cause itching and skin irritation as soon as I went in.

I booked after reading other people’s reviews, unfortunately. There was a dried urine stain on the toilet seat, rubbish on the floor and hair in the bathtub. The receptionist was texting while talking to me and made me wait. I stay in hotels regularly because I work out of town 3-4 days a week, and this was by far the dirtiest place I’ve ever stayed. I didn’t even bother asking them for an apology. Most disgusting hotel I’ve been in.
