By 11pm we’d been moved again, this time to a room with a clean bed and bathroom, though the floor still wasn’t fully clean. I think that may be the best you can expect here. I’ll make a formal complaint after the stay, because this has been unacceptable. Earlier, our first room had black spores on the bedding, hairs in the bathroom, marks on the walls, and stains on the curtains and carpet. After we complained, we were moved to the other side of the hotel. That room seemed a bit more updated, but nobody told us it was above the events space. There were more hairs in the bathroom and marks on the carpet that looked a bit like blood, though the bed was clean. It seemed they had few rooms left, so we put up with it. A party downstairs was so loud that I could hear people talking over the music, and everything in the room was vibrating. I couldn’t hear the TV properly, and the hotel phone and my own phone calls to reception went unanswered for 20 minutes. I eventually went down to complain. We’d driven five hours for what we expected to be a relaxing night, with my partner’s powerlifting competition at 8am the next morning. We chose this out-of-the-way hotel because it had a spa centre, but the stay was far from relaxing. For a supposedly 4-star hotel and a reputable brand like Mercure, I expected a certain standard. Most Premier Inns and Travelodges are better. I wouldn’t recommend staying here if you want a quiet night.

Dinner and breakfast were both great and reasonably priced, with Alison giving us attentive service. Poppy and Nina welcomed us warmly, and they did their best to help us despite our late booking. Our room was spacious, the bed very comfortable, and we had a lovely view across the fields. We also enjoyed the spa: the pool was warm and the sauna was just what we needed after a stressful week. My partner had a massage and would highly recommend it. We’d be happy to come back.

Lisa at the front desk was lovely and got us into our room two hours early. Since it was my wife’s birthday, she also gave her a complimentary drink. The room was clean and nice, and they provided a travel cot even though we hadn’t brought one or booked it. An easy check-in and a perfect weekend getaway. We’d definitely visit again.

Jane, Claire, Grace, Nina, Lisa, Adam and the rest of the crew made our first Maidstone show a success. They were among the best teams we’ve worked with, and someone was always nearby to answer questions. Nothing felt like too much trouble. We run lots of events for clients throughout the year, and the Great Danes Hotel team were brilliant from beginning to end. A huge thank you! 💜

Leeds castle is very easy to get to from here. Our room was nice but quite dated, and it wasn’t practical having no sockets beside the bed. The front desk was good when we arrived, though the stay got less organized after that. We got a call about payment even though we’d already paid. The next morning, while we were getting ready to leave after our one-night stay, an employee let themselves into the room, thinking we’d checked out. It wasn’t great for our privacy. There was a general lack of attention to detail, with a lot of “sorry for the inconvenience.” We enjoyed both meals, dinner and breakfast, but the fish portion was tiny, about the size of Nemo, for the price. Restaurant service was awful even with only three or four tables occupied, and we often had to try to get someone’s attention. We were there during the week, so maybe things are different at other times, but that was our experience.
