I won't stay here again. I'd brought a valuable family heirloom, a 70-year-old antique toy I'd only received that morning. It had been in mint condition, but when I came back from going out, it was broken. Management denied responsibility and, more upsettingly, played down the loss. Now it needs to be glued back together. I was moved to another room last night, where the walls were paper thin. I didn't sleep at all because I could hear the couple next door snoring, snorting, and gasping all night. The beds seem to put their heads right through the thin wall. I couldn't reach reception because the phone line was dead, and my mobile has had no connection since I arrived. I'm exhausted and feel ill, so the special day out in Durham I had planned for tomorrow will be ruined. These were two days off from my arduous, stressful job, and this has hardly been restorative. I deeply regret staying here and urge others to avoid it if they can. I chose the place because I thought it was accessible for Beamish. It is, but be aware there's a long, narrow, fast country road outside the hotel with no path or proper lighting. At certain times it seems dangerous for children or women on their own.

The room looked beautiful for the Whitney/Tina night, and both the food and service were outstanding. Everyone working there was friendly and helpful. The hotel itself feels a little tired, but for the price it's great value. I'd highly recommend it and would definitely stay again. Thank you all.

We both enjoyed our choices from the restaurant menu, and breakfast was good too. The room was warm, with a really big, comfortable bed. A lovely hotel, and the staff were very helpful.

The staff made a great impression, from Julia at breakfast to Clare at dinner. Breakfast had plenty to choose from, including full English and continental options, and the poached eggs were great. Dinner was good as well, though vegetarian choices were limited. We had an executive room. The bed was big and comfortable, and it was cleaned daily even though we were only there for two nights. It was clean and functional, but a few things let it down: there was no safe, the toilet seat hinge covers were missing, and the sink was cracked. The hotel was friendly and pleasant, and we'd certainly come back. There was a wedding happening when we arrived, and the music made it almost impossible to hear the receptionist, but it didn't affect the room, so don't let that put you off.
