It’s a listed building, and there’s a reasonably cheap bar and a fairly large car park. It worked well for what I needed, but public transport isn’t easy to use for much of the time. There weren’t any meal options while I was there, though I was told the kitchen should be opening soon.

For the price, it’s okay. The hotel is in the docks area and is clean and basic, with helpful, friendly staff and excellent service. There’s a free car park, though getting through the entrance is a tight squeeze. The bar is open, but unfortunately they aren’t serving food while the kitchen is being refurbished. My room had an ensuite, a clean shower and towels, so it did the job.

I felt very safe staying alone, even though the Waterloo Hotel is in Newport Docklands’ industrial area. The car park is locked from 9.30pm until 5.30am, which was reassuring for leaving my car overnight. Inside, the late Victorian architecture and design are stunning, especially the stained glass windows and ornate stairs and banisters. My room was clean and cosy, with a good shower. The staff and service were wonderful. Jack was friendly and helpful as soon as I arrived, and Raj and his son were the same.

Raj was the highlight of my stay at the Waterloo Hotel in Newport, Wales. The confirmation email says reception isn’t open around the clock and asks guests arriving after 9pm to let the hotel know. I forgot, but Raj still got up at around 1am and checked me in himself. His professionalism and care for guests were exceptional. My room was spotless, the bed was very comfortable, and the stay exceeded my expectations. The accommodation and service together made it excellent value for money. I’d highly recommend the hotel, especially for the service Raj provided.
