The room was reasonable, but the shower drained slowly, the toilet cistern lid was cracked, and the stair carpets looked dirty and not properly cleaned. I found breakfast too salty overall, and the bacon was overcooked for my taste. The owner seasons the food while cooking, which doesn’t seem like a good idea for people with high blood pressure or diabetes, especially with so much salt already in processed foods like bacon and baked beans. I’ve never known a place to season breakfast while cooking it.

The station and University are convenient from here, but that’s where the good points ended for me. The building smelled musty, and my room was dated and dirty. Street noise was loud. The shower was mouldy, its door wouldn’t shut properly, and with no ventilation in the room it made everything steam up. The private toilet in the hallway had a dirty underside to the seat. The sink was loose on the wall, and the kettle was dirty with a handle that fell off. The whole place needs a major refurb and a deep clean from top to bottom. I was surprised given how positive the older reviews are, and can’t understand why it’s become so bad.

The host was especially polite and helpful. My room was spotless, comfortable, and completely quiet. It’s also well located for the train station and university. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

I booked three nights but left after just one, as quickly as I could. The room was dusty, the walls were stained and dirty, and the bedding was filthy underneath the covers. The bed was in poor repair, and the lamp flickered, which made me suspect faulty wiring. The shower was in the room with no ventilation, which has to be seen to be believed. The sink was cracked, and the private hallway toilet was stained and gross. Even the spoon in the tea mug was filthy. I didn’t want to touch anything and had a terrible night before leaving first thing in the morning. Don’t stay here.

It’s a great area, an easy walk to the harbour and main attractions, and a good price for a nice two-night weekend. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and the place was clean. Parking is very limited, with only three spaces round the back on a tight little road, though overnight parking is available for £2. Breakfast was a good cooked one, and the coffee served in a cafetiere was lovely. I’d definitely come again.
