Royal Sportsman Hotel

We went for dinner on a Sunday night in January and asked if we could order, which we were told we could. Nobody mentioned the kitchen was due to close in 10 minutes, and we hadn't known. The waitress was polite and efficient. My partner had fish and I had scampi. It arrived quite quickly, but later I was up half the night violently ill with what I can only assume was food poisoning from the scampi, since the Sportsman was the only place I ate or drank that night. Next time, I think I'll stick to the local fish and chip shop.

The one problem was that the trip came to an end and we had to head home. We had a really enjoyable recent stay in this lovely hotel. The rooms were simply furnished, with all the things you need and none you don't. The staff were super friendly, the restaurant was wonderful, and we enjoyed both breakfast and our evening meals there. Looking forward to returning. Very well done.

The room let down an otherwise great stay. We were in room 7 in the courtyard, where a really strong wet dog smell hit us as soon as we entered. Leaving the door and window open didn't shift it, and it was still just as strong the next morning. I reported it because it was very unpleasant. The double bed sloped down on the left, so I felt I might fall out, though it was comfortable. The hotel itself was great, with friendly staff, a lovely bar and restaurant, and a good breakfast.

During his six night placement with Ffestiniog Railways, my son had a wonderful stay. He was well looked after, from the warm welcome to the delicious meals. After checkout, housekeeping found the calculator and book he'd accidentally left behind. They emailed me promptly and even arranged a courier to return them. I'm truly grateful for their thoughtfulness and excellent service. Their care made a lasting impression on both of us.
