Lighthouse Cottage - Shared Facilities

We were left stranded with our baby, and there were no other nearby hotels available. The host also refused to refund the booking. I’d booked through Booking.com but accidentally left our one-year-old off the reservation. When we arrived around 8 PM, the host refused to let us stay. We repeatedly asked if he could make an exception for just one night and offered to pay extra, but he showed no empathy or willingness to help. It was a very upsetting experience. He was rigid and showed no basic courtesy or understanding. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. This man should not be in hospitality. If you want kindness, flexibility or a safe stay with your family, stay away.

The place was freezing, and there was no way to switch on the heating. I also found the rooms untidy, with visible dirt in the bathrooms and kitchen. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Lighthouse Cottage is very handy for getting around the rest of Skye, and we had a lovely stay with great hospitality. If you want breakfast, check with Angus and he’ll do his best. The house rules are pretty normal. Just remember, lock Angus out and there’ll be no breakfast for you, lol.

We had a rough experience. We booked late at night and didn’t get an immediate notice that prepayment was required, at least on the mobile site. The email asking for payment arrived at 6 am, and our reservation was cancelled at 8. I don’t get up at 8 on holiday, and I didn’t check email that day. After a full day of driving, we arrived to find the host wouldn’t let us in, even if we paid, because we were 10-15 minutes past 8 pm and had a child. After an hour of frustration and searching, we were lucky to find a nice place in Portree for the same price, with a private bathroom and plenty nearby, including good cafes like Birch and car chargers. Everything on Skye gets booked months ahead, so an unexpected cancellation can mean driving 100 miles to the big island in the middle of the night. The place itself is in the middle of nowhere, not very near the shore, with lots of bottles by the entrance. I understand people may book anyway because accommodation is scarce on Skye in summer. Still, make sure to check your emails, don’t have kids, arrive early and hope the host likes you.
