The room was upstairs, which would have been difficult for my wife, so lovely Jake helped us into one of the outside rooms instead. It was acceptable, though a little tight. There was no case rack, so our luggage left some mud on the bed, and a bathroom shelf would have been useful. The shower was nice and hot, the towels and bed linen were good, the cookie treats were welcome, and the heating worked well. We chose this place at random near the local Friary landmark. It's a quaint little pub, and we had a great meal by the wood fire, with independent brewery beers to choose from. The steak pie was proper, the fresh gluten free cod and chips were nicely crisp, and we shared mussels marinière to start. We were too full for sweets. Recommended.

My partner and I had a very bad experience here. We called ahead to say we were nearby and heading over for a late lunch, then sat at table 13 in the garden with our drinks and placed our food order at the counter, as required. We stayed there for an hour without moving, but nothing arrived. When my partner went to ask, we were told the order had been put on table 30 by mistake, and that nobody was at that table when the food was brought out. They also said the manager had been looking for us but couldn't find us when the food was ready. No one came over to ask whether we'd ordered or whether the food they were about to serve was ours. We paid for the one lemonade on tap and left. What made me furious was being told things that hadn't happened, as if we were imagining it, after no food had been served, and then not even being offered the lemonade for free as an apology. Given the audacity and lack of concern for keeping customers happy, I wouldn't recommend this place.
Even in winter, the outdoor area was pleasant, with heaters, blankets, and even hot water bottles. It has a lovely family feel, and the food was good quality with generous portions. Our server, Darcie, was chatty and smiley, and went above and beyond to look after all ten of us. She was a great example of brilliant service. Some dishes were pricey, though that was expected for this kind of pub. I'd recommend it.
This was our second time at The Ship, and we'd go again. It's a cosy pub with lots of seating, and dogs are welcome. The gluten free fish and chips were the best I've had, with lovely light batter. Service was friendly, though one person waiting on us didn't know about the beers on tap or other drinks, so we ended up ordering at the bar. Not a deal breaker.
A lovely, quaint place to stay, with a great view from our clean, bright room and a nice little en-suite. It's a great spot for birdwatching and being out in nature. The pub food was good and the staff were friendly, though breakfast service could have used a couple more people.
