Getting around inside was confusing, especially finding reception, the spa, and a clear way out. The grounds were beautiful, green and spacious, with a lovely natural feel. Our room was warm, cosy and roomy, with the facilities we needed, including a kettle and iron. The main letdown was service. Requests took a long time, and there was no housekeeping during our stay, so we ended up sorting most issues ourselves. The spa has a pool, sauna and steam room, but feels dated, and the jacuzzi is so small that more than two people would be impractical. There's a lot going for this hotel in its setting and room comfort, but clearer directions, refreshed spa facilities and better service would make a real difference.

Hannah, the food and beverage assistant, was brilliant, polite and hardworking, even after the manager came in and put her under pressure for no reason. The bar and food were nice, but the room bathroom had hair on the floor and an 8 ft turd in the toilet. Not nice. The bed was clean and comfortable, and the room itself was okay. The hotel needs updating in areas. The full fry-up was ready in 48 seconds, which makes me think it was microwaved. We came for a spa hotel but couldn't use any of the facilities, and nobody told us when we booked.

Steve at reception was amazing and upgraded us to a double suite, which made the stay very good value. We enjoyed the spa: it was quiet, the steam room worked well and had a good size and temperature, and the sauna and jacuzzi were great. The pool was a good temperature for swimming. We liked the squash soup at the included buffet dinner, my partner enjoyed the beef, and the cheesecake and carrot cake were nice. Breakfast was good too. There were a few things that took the shine off it. The room was cold, and we were told the heaters don't come on until mid-October. Steve tried to find us a heater but couldn't. The place looks tired and needs updating, and the dinner buffet had little variety and felt more like a canteen than a four-star hotel. Guests in the car park were loud until the early hours. We also had to pay £5 each to use the spa, and only got one complimentary drink between the two of us.

Staff were very friendly and the location was good. Our standard double was clean and pleasant, with two bottles of Harrogate water, Borders biscuits, Netflix and free WiFi. At dinner, the garlic prawns weren't garlicky enough, the fish and chips were overdone, and both drinks came with ice despite our asking for none. GM George was very nice and offered us an upgrade next time. Hope your shoulder gets better soon. Worth a stay.

I had a lovely solo break after the Christmas rush. The pool was quiet enough that I had it to myself for ages, and breakfast was delicious with plenty to eat. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I'd like to come back for couples spa treatments soon.
