We had a roomy bedroom, though it was very warm on the lower level. Turning down the radiator and opening the window sorted that out, but then we heard the loudest seagulls we'd ever heard. The building itself was lovely, and the staff were helpful and welcoming. Our room was clean, and the self-service breakfast had a good range of options and plenty of tables. The evening meal was just okay, and the gravy reminded us of dishwater. Bars were close by. We ended up here on a Mystery Bus trip and would go again.
The family room worked well for four adults, with two separate bedrooms, one double and one twin, plus a decent bathroom. There was enough wardrobe space and seating, and the room stayed warm. We also had plenty of tea, coffee and milk. Reception and bar staff were really nice and made us feel welcome. Breakfast was okay, though the dining room was very busy. The location is handy for everything, and I wouldn't hesitate to return. We hadn't expected much, so the hotel was a pleasant surprise. The only problem was a very loud noise outside at 7am that woke us up. It might have been a generator. With the window open just a crack, it sounded especially loud.
Antonia and Carla were especially kind and couldn't do enough for me. They were polite, friendly and very accommodating. When I mentioned my back problems, the staff at the prince of wales hotel Southport made sure I had a ground-floor room. They were all very helpful.
For the money, I'd definitely return. We booked a family room for the two of us and our little dog, and it had a good amount of space, with a separate lounge, chairs and settees. There was a television in both rooms, a modern bathroom, and swipe-card access. The hotel has two public lounges, and one had a singer on the nights we were there. We found the bar prices cheaper than some nearby pubs, and met some lovely guests. We only ate at the hotel once, for lunch. It was a three-course, help-yourself meal, and the roast beef was so tender it melted in your mouth. Since we had the dog with us, we ate in the bar. We stayed for a few days midweek and were pleasantly surprised by the low cost.
For what we paid, it was a decent hotel in a good location. Our bedroom was large and clean, though the double bed was small. There was a good buffet spread at dinner and plenty of choice at breakfast. The food was okay, about what you'd expect from a three-star place. The two women in the restaurant deserve a mention: they were friendly and attentive, and never seemed to stop working. I'd been a bit apprehensive after reading some reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised by how helpful all the staff were. We stayed as part of a package deal to see Simply Red.
