Richard greeted me with such a cheerful welcome when I came into The Dun Cow Inn, tired and looking for somewhere comfortable to eat. I was on my own and recovering from a broken leg with bad nerve damage, so having a comfy seat mattered. The bar was busy for a Monday afternoon, but every staff member I met was pleasant and cheerful. My scampi, chips, peas and salad were delicious, and the portion was huge, with plenty of tartare sauce. A great wee pub for lunch or dinner if you’re nearby.

We didn’t stay in the rooms, but the pub itself was lovely, with old decor and a traditional feel, and the toilets were clean. The food was beautifully presented and arrived really hot, even though we were a large group and they were busy. Parking was tricky because there were so many people, though that wasn’t the pub’s fault. My only small gripe was that staff started clearing plates before everyone had finished. They hadn’t noticed, and then carried on, but I know they didn’t mean anything by it. The staff and food were lovely. Thank you x

We had fun chatting with other guests over breakfast, and the place seems to draw a pleasant crowd. My wife and I stayed two nights and really liked the atmosphere, the friendly staff and the art on the walls. The decor captures what I love about the UK, and the price was reasonable. There’s a bus stop a short walk away with service up to Durham. Such a wonderful gem. Highly recommend!

We were seated right beside the kitchen walkway, with staff continually carrying hot food past us. Dining there with a toddler felt unsafe. Nobody acknowledged the risk or offered to move us, and several staff members acted as if we were a nuisance for being there. Their manner was rude, dismissive and disrespectful throughout. Families shouldn’t be made to feel unwelcome, and basic safety deserves consideration. This was really disappointing and has put us off going back.

The food was wonderful and the room was great. Richard and his staff were friendly and professional, and I couldn’t have asked for better service. I stayed at the hotel after playing a gig at the Sedgefield Parish Hall on 17 January 2026. I can’t recommend this hotel enough.
