We were married here a few years back and everything went really well. The wedding planner was very professional. We visited as a family in December 25, and the menu had changed since our earlier visits. We're looking forward to trying it soon. The only thing we agreed on was that the beds are a bit hard. We've stayed several times, though, and plan to return in spring or summer. It's a lovely place to visit, surrounded by quiet, well-kept grounds. Reception and the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful. On one earlier visit there was even a cat by the huge staircase as you come in. Highly recommended.

The setting is the biggest plus: The Upper House sits beside the Downs Banks nature reserve, so it's easy to go for a walk, and the view from the dining and breakfast room is great. The countryside around this manor in uphill Barlaston is lovely for relaxing. The atmosphere inside is fantastic too, especially in the smoke room by the fireplace. Service was really nice, everyone was kind and helpful. Our room was tidy, although I'm not a fan of fitted carpets because of cleanliness. A few things could use replacement or adjustment, which you might expect in an old house. Cat lovers might enjoy meeting Cookie and Bella. Bella is the black and white hotel cat, while black Cookie comes from nearby. They can't stand each other, but both are extremely sweet.

We came for the night because a family member was having a special birthday meal there. The meal was delicious, with excellent service and a smile throughout. Afterwards, the open fire and comfy chairs in the snug made a lovely place to finish the evening. Everything was just right, from the warm welcome when we arrived to the first-class breakfast before we left. The bedroom was spotless and cosy. The Upper House is a gem, we'll definitely be back. Thanks to everyone who made the visit so enjoyable.

The grounds are beautiful, peaceful and welcoming, and the staff were super friendly. We were warned that a function might mean music could be heard in some rooms, but ours was at the front and all we heard was the quiet wildlife in the woods and grounds. Dinner was divine, well presented and good value. Breakfast the next morning was included and just as nicely cooked and presented. Our classic room was small, but perfect for one night: modern, cosy and very clean, with a large shower that had both rainfall and wand heads. Hot water came straight away. Rooms have names instead of numbers, which makes the place feel different. There's a lovely bar and an old-school lounge with Chesterfields, wingback chairs, leather rocking chairs and a lovely log fire. Friends from Stoke joined us for dinner and were impressed, as they hadn't known the hotel was there. It's about five minutes from Wedgewood and ten minutes from the A34, with easy access. We'll choose it first next time.

Dinner last night was superb, and breakfast this morning was lovely, though sadly I couldn't manage a full English. We wanted to stay one night nearby while visiting relatives, and this turned out to be a real gem. The hotel is beautiful and charming, set peacefully in the countryside. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. We'll be back soon.
