The swan at streatley

When we realized Uber wouldn't take us back to our hotel a few miles away, and local taxis were all quoting an hour's wait, we asked if we could stay for dinner. Anna had already been kindly calling taxi companies for us, and somehow got us a table with a river view. Jason and Anna kept checking on us and made sure we'd eaten and were outside in time for the taxi. The food was excellent, the menu had plenty of choice, and the staff were really helpful. We'd come in without a booking on Saturday night, hoping to have a drink by the River in the last daylight. Jason first found us a table with a view for a short stay. Very happy to recommend.

Great location, but we were really disappointed with everything else. Our kids were happy with their simple pasta and tomato sauce, but my wife's linguini was bland and boring. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came medium well to well, so I sent it back. Half an hour later, after my wife and kids had finished, it still hadn't arrived. I asked them to cancel it and said I'd just have dessert, which took another 15 minutes to come. The manager didn't apologize or try to make things right. A medium rare steak takes six minutes to cook, and it felt obvious that my meal wasn't a priority. The lad who first served us was nice enough, though he had that floppy-haired private school look. The rest of the staff were useless. The manager, wearing braids and a stripy shirt, seemed not to care. We heard him several times moaning to staff about customer complaints, including ours. There were problems at other tables too. A diner next to us had a severe gluten allergy and asked to speak with the chef. The manager said the chef wasn't available and offered to pass on a message. The customer quietly explained his needs to him, but his food still came out wrong. He had to send it back, even though the manager had insisted it was gluten free, then later changed his story. Two other tables also returned their food while we were there. The waitress took our order carefully, and another staff member noted our allergies, but the rest of the service was a mess. Disappointing.

The atmosphere and location were stunning, and the coffee was smooth, rich, and just what we needed. I stopped in with a friend for coffee and drinks, and the staff were so kind and helpful. When my car wouldn't start, a few of them came out to jump it and made sure I was okay before they left. Great drinks and genuinely good people. Huge thanks to the guys who rescued me, true lifesavers 🤘 🙏

The food was okay compared with other places I've reviewed. My sirloin was good, though I've had better meals elsewhere for a similar price. The table beside us ordered the mezze plate, and that looked really good. The Swan is a lovely, roomy riverside spot, with outdoor seating in the conservatory and a cosy snug indoors. Staff were polite and very professional. I'd recommend a visit.
