The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa

The streets just outside the hotel are full of character, with antique shops, cozy eateries and charming boutiques that make for lovely walks and a chance to explore local culture. The building itself is beautifully preserved, balancing its heritage feel with modern comforts and the latest amenities you’d expect from a premium stay. What made it special was the staff. Everyone was warm, courteous and genuinely helpful, from reception at check-in to the housekeeping team who kept the rooms immaculate and the breakfast staff who were welcoming and attentive each morning. This was easily one of the highlights of our trip, and we’d gladly come back.

The food was very good, and the place itself is nice, but dinner was let down by slow, poor service and no atmosphere. We were in a hurry to leave. It took 20 minutes after we arrived to get water and menus, and the waiter was slow, unsmiling and had no personality. When we left, we were asked how the evening had been. It felt awkward to be honest with the waiter standing there, since I didn’t want to embarrass him in front of management. Thankfully, we had a voucher, so the evening didn’t feel wasted. Still, it was my first dinner visit and we won’t be back. A real shame.

We had a Saturday night stay as part of an overnight weekend, with dinner and breakfast included, and it was a wonderful experience. The quirky building really adds to the atmosphere and romance of the place. Both meals were fabulous, and the food alone is worth visiting for. The service was caring, friendly and helpful. Thanks to the whole team, including the people we didn’t meet, for making a positive difference and making our stay memorable. I’d absolutely recommend the Swan at Lavenham to anyone after a chilled, relaxing, premium experience.

The scones were very good and there was plenty of cream and jam, so it made a decent cream tea. But as an afternoon tea, it was disappointing and expensive. I’m fussy about afternoon tea, and this one didn’t come close to what I expected. My guest was disappointed too. I booked for two at midday, but nobody was around when we arrived, so I had to chase someone up. We were eventually seated and given cream, jam and coffee, but the afternoon tea itself didn’t arrive until 12:30. The sandwiches weren’t proper sandwiches. An open sandwich should not be bruschetta with shavings on top! The cakes were tiny, taste-size portions, and all had the same lemon flavour running through them. I expected better. The best afternoon tea I’ve had was at the pickerell in ixworth, with Tilly's in Brandon close behind, where they offered a choice of proper sandwiches. Such a shame.
