Betty was treated like a VIP: she got a soft dog bed and a bag of treats, and the pub clearly welcomes dogs. The covered outdoor space had heaters and electric blankets, and the prices seemed fair. Even at 3pm on Saturday it was busy, with friendly staff who looked happy to be there. We lived nearby 15 years ago and remembered the pub changing landlords constantly. Our visit about five years back was disappointing, with untrained staff, a rushed attitude and mediocre, overpriced food. This time was a huge improvement. One member of the bar staff said the current landlady was largely responsible. Whatever the reason, it’s a good pub again, and we’ll return.

The burger was amazing. I had a lovely meal, and the staff were brilliant and couldn’t have been more helpful. It was a last-minute visit, but they still found me a seat. I’d definitely recommend the place.

They kindly took our coffees off the bill when they found out we were celebrating our anniversary. We’d come in for breakfast, and the service was charming. My wife had smoked salmon on a muffin with poached eggs and hollandaise, while I had a full English. I was glad it came with black pudding. It didn’t have baked beans, though I didn’t miss them. The food was nice and presented well.
