Alexandra Hotel

We paid a fairly modest amount for a weekend in one of the superior sea view rooms, and the hotel was clean, welcoming and pleasant, with a very convenient location. Staff were so friendly, helpful and accommodating that they did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. I’d prepaid for breakfast and missed it one morning, but they actually phoned to ask if I wanted them to keep it available or refund me. I’ve never known another hotel do that. The location is handy for the high street’s shops, cafes and restaurants, right by the beach and close to the fort. In summer, the ferry may be running across the harbour. The room was spacious and immaculate, with a recently renovated-looking bathroom, a large shower, plenty of very hot water and good pressure. There was bottled water and the usual hotel bits in the room. There is on-site parking, but only for a handful of cars and it needs to be booked in advance. It’s a very tight squeeze. With my big 4x4, I might not have been able to get out, or could have blocked someone in, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a large vehicle. With a small car, it’d be lovely if you planned to drive around outside Weymouth. I’m sure you could ask nicely to drop off bags and then move to a free permitted parking area. The main problem was broken sleep from noise, light and the bed. The walls between rooms are incredibly thin. We could make out distinct words from conversations next door, and on Valentine’s Day weekend we heard very intimate details in the evening. We didn’t want to turn on the TV to cover it up because it was mounted on the wall by the bed in the room on the other side, and we didn’t want to disturb those guests. It would be well worth looking into soundproofing or deadening the walls. Our top-floor room may have been unusual, but it only had blinds, no curtains, so very little morning light was kept out. The single glazing, I think, possibly due to the building being listed, also let in a lot of noise from the fairground opposite and the repetitive merry-go-round organ songs right outside. That might not bother people who wake up at a normal time. The mattress had very little support and was particularly uncomfortable, the one thing I really couldn’t forgive. Such a shame, since everything else in the room was comfortable and welcoming. Apart from those issues, the stay was close to faultless for the price.

Grace and Lorna were wonderful staff, nothing was too much trouble. I’ve just come back from a really relaxing mini break at the Alexandra Hotel. The location and room were great, and breakfast was lovely. We’ll certainly plan another trip. It was great, thank you 👍.

The coffee in the rooms was poor, my only gripe. Otherwise, it was perfect. This is a beautiful little hotel, with a great location, lovely rooms, friendly staff who can’t do enough to help, and a fantastic continental breakfast. We had a wonderful stay.

It felt safe and friendly, with a relaxed, homely atmosphere. The host gave us a warm welcome and all the staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean and thoughtfully decorated, and the plentiful continental breakfast was delicious with excellent coffee. The location is perfect, right opposite the gardens and across the road from the beach. Shops and the harbour are a one-minute walk away. We’d love to come back!
