The Waterford Arms

The breakfasts were lovely, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We also enjoyed the food: the regular fish and chips deal for two, with peas, bread and butter, and a pot of tea, was excellent. The regular Sunday lunch was lovely too, and the potato and leek soup was nice. Room 4 was very cramped for our three-night stay. There wasn't drawer space, just a small hanging area by the window, and my partner hit his head on it. The kettle, two huge mugs and all the tea things took up the tiny bedside table. We managed, but it wasn't ideal for three nights. We've stayed in room 5 next door before, and it had more space and room for clothes. If we come back, I'd check the room layout carefully, especially for a stay longer than one night. Hope this helps anyone booking.

We all chose different dishes, so I can't speak to every meal, but the food was lovely overall. My brother's mixed grill had a small issue, which the staff sorted out straight away. I had the Waterford whale, and it was delicious: crisp batter around moist, very white fish. Even the mushy peas were good, lol. The setting has beautiful views, and the staff were welcoming and polite. I'll definitely be back. This is just a review of the food and service.

The evening meals were great, with generous portions and plenty of seafood choices. I was here on a work trip and had no real complaints. Breakfast started a little late for my work schedule, but the staff kindly sorted takeaway bacon sandwiches for me in the mornings. I'd happily bring my family for a weekend stay if we're in the area.

The food was good value overall, and my wife's Thai fish curry was spot on. I finally got the famous Whale & Chips this time, after missing out about 45 years ago when they had sold out. It cost £30, but the fish was massive and there were loads of chips, plus mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. I even had to leave a few bits of batter and chips, which isn't like me. We were there during a very cold spell, and the room stayed quite cold despite the heating being turned all the way up. I asked for an extra heater, but they didn't have one. The location works well for Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and the Northumbrian coast, and service was decent.
