The location is perfect, and we found out that although paid parking only ran until 11:00 AM on Sunday, you can move your car to the street and park free there that day. That was about the only useful discovery during a disappointing stay. We were charged another £30 for parking soon after arrival, bringing the total to £100 a night, and the room didn't feel worth that. It was in a separate building, old, dingy and in need of maintenance, with a basement-like feel. Since it was at ground level and visible from other rooms and the car park, we kept the blinds shut the whole time. Skipping toiletries in the name of “saving the planet” felt laughable, and the bathroom heater only came on for a few hours a day, which was odd and uncomfortable. Breakfast tasted nice but the portions were tiny. The 8-10 AM service window felt like a way to keep guests from showing up, and we skipped it on our second day to eat elsewhere. At this price, I expected better value. It seemed like corners were being cut wherever possible.

We'd absolutely recommend this place and would definitely stay again. The value was very good, including parking at a very reasonable price for York. It's about a 10-minute walk to town. Our room was a good size, warm and very clean. Breakfast had a decent range, and the staff were friendly and impressively efficient during a busy service. It was a pleasure watching the team work together, much better than at many big chain hotels we've stayed in. Spot on, and better than a lot of places we've tried.

The hotel is in an excellent spot, a short walk from the city centre, and everyone else on staff was friendly. Still, the stay was disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend it or return. The rooms are very basic and mediocre at best, with rotten window frames and bathroom sealant that was dirty and in poor condition. One staff member was rude and unfriendly. She didn't say good morning or welcome us to breakfast, just barked, “Room number?!” She seemed constantly stressed about the shortage of breakfast tables and pressured us to leave while we were still eating so other guests could sit. Breakfast was a very limited menu rather than a buffet. The porridge was the only option that seemed somewhat healthy, but it was extremely plain and came without fruit. When we asked for fruit, we were practically laughed at, so we brought some from the supermarket ourselves on the following days.

The breakfast was great, and the staff serving it were lovely. When we came back later, the woman at reception was warm, helpful and welcoming. Our arrival experience was different: we got there at 1 pm, with check-in at 3, and asked if we could leave a few things there. The man at the front desk said he'd prefer we didn't, and didn't feel welcoming or friendly at all. I was also surprised to be charged for parking. Still, it's a lovely place in a perfect location. Thanks for a pleasant stay.

Check-in was easy, and we parked in the hotel's own spaces for £15 for the night. The town centre and any shops we needed were only 500 metres away. Breakfast was lovely and cooked perfectly. Really pleased with the hotel, and we'll definitely come back.
