Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

The staff are what make this hotel special. I was travelling alone as a cancer patient and became quite sick, with no idea what to do because I’d never had that sort of emergency in the US. Charlotte called 999, while Tom brought me water and an electrolyte drink and then called a taxi. When I got back that evening, Charlotte came to my room with more water bottles and toiletries. For the rest of my stay, they and other staff checked on me and reminded me that the desk was open 24/7 if I needed anything. I’ve never felt so safe and secure in a hotel. This was my second stay at the Hampton by Hilton in York, and I came back because it really is a dream hotel for the area. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with soft beds and seating areas, the location makes it easy to get around town and see the sights, and breakfast is included and nice.

Breakfast was good, with decent food and a reasonable range, though my eldest son was disappointed there were only scrambled eggs. The dining room coffee machines had no English Breakfast tea for about 30 minutes. I’d mentioned it at reception, where a staff member said the dining room team would sort it out, but didn’t alert anyone. One morning our table was poorly laid, so we had to collect cutlery and condiments from other tables. I liked having a bar fridge, kettle, hairdryer, and a big TV. The two pillows were welcome too, and the coat hooks and adjoining door between our rooms were useful. The hotel is well located for walking into the old town, so some noise is to be expected. There was a little noise from guests and quite a bit from people passing by late on Friday and Saturday, since we were on floor 1. We faced construction, but kept the curtain closed for privacy. The queen beds were unusually low and took some getting used to, though they were reasonably comfortable. I was also cold and couldn’t work out the heating and cooling system. Teaspoons and extra blankets would have helped. A welcome note saying those are available from reception would’ve been handy, as I only realised after reading another review when our stay was nearly over. The shower was only okay. It did the job, but the small head made it hard to warm up under the open air shower, and you have to watch that water doesn’t spray through the open half. The shower gel dispenser stayed empty throughout our visit, even after I took it off the wall and left it on the vanity to alert housekeeping. Our glasses weren’t clean when we arrived either. There was also an unpleasant high pitched noise from the power point or something near the bedhead. The room was comfortable overall, but there are a few things that could be improved.

We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back. The room was beautiful and spotless, with modern decor, a nice view, a comfy bed, and all the amenities we needed. The hotel staff were great, and the location is central.

Our twin room was ready early, so we were checked in ahead of time. It was stylish and immaculately clean, and breakfast was sumptuous with options for all tastes. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back. Thank you to the hotel team.
