The snowstorm turned a simple overnight trip into an adventure, and the staff made a stressful situation feel almost fun. The hotel stayed warm, clean, and welcoming, and breakfast was still hot the next morning. Everyone kept a positive attitude. I got stuck in town when the roads iced over and snow arrived faster than expected. With other places short staffed or stressed, Tommy at the front desk greeted me with a big smile, checked me in quickly, and helped me find safe food options nearby before places closed. He stayed calm and helpful with a lobby full of stranded travelers. That evening, Donte Harris and general manager Anthony were helping guests extend stays, answering questions, handing out extra blankets, and checking that people were okay. They coordinated shuttles and checked on elderly guests so no one was left outside in the cold. It felt like a team looking after family. Huge thanks to Donte, Anthony, and Tommy. They were a dream team, and service like that feels rare these days. I’ll definitely be back when I’m in the area. Thanks for making a snowstorm into such a good experience!

The room looked like five stars at first, but the shower was a mess. One door didn’t work, and I nearly hurt my arm trying to turn the water on. There was no conditioner, and afterward the shower kept dripping loudly. I called downstairs to ask for maintenance on Saturday and housekeeping, but was told maintenance wouldn’t be available until Monday. They said I could come down, get a key to unlock the conditioner bottle, then bring it down and swap it. Since housekeeping was working over the weekend, it seemed easy enough for them to refill it, as they should have done before I got the room. The mini fridge was loud too, though I had earplugs, so I figured the fridge and dripping could be my music. The next morning, while I was reading in bed, maintenance knocked and re-tracked the door, muttering that I’d still need to use the working door. When I asked about the running water, they said it would take more work and I’d have to live with it. At breakfast I spotted a stinkbug on the lounge blinds. We’d had a cold snap, so that happens. After being out all day, I came back, dropped my things on the bed, and found a little buggy friend there too. The conditioner still hadn’t been refilled, just as they’d said unless I brought it downstairs. I got the drip almost stopped by turning the faucet like the Hulk. It was only a small drip after that, quiet enough with my earplugs in. I still slept badly, expecting to wake up with a stinkbug crawling on me.

The customer service alone put me off staying here. I canceled and booked Courtyard by Marriott Winston-Salem Hanes Mall for less than the tournament group rate. I’d reserved two nights in October for a soccer tournament, then called in early December after the schedules came out to change it to one night. The front desk clerk made the change and emailed an updated confirmation. A day later, Sales Coordinator Donte called and said they wouldn’t honor it because the group rate required a two-night minimum. I hadn’t known about that and explained politely. He rudely told me the hotel was sold out, so I could keep the two-night booking or pay double for one night. I pointed out that my reservation confirmation said nothing about a two-night minimum. He replied that “he’s not holding a gun to my head to make me stay 2 nights.” The Customer Service Rep was rude to me too. My teammates had no trouble changing their reservations. Maybe I was late to the game and Donte couldn’t accept another change without losing too much money for the hotel. The tournament director also confirmed there was no tournament rate contract in place, but the hotel still wouldn’t help adjust my reservation. I chose not to stay.

There was a little mix-up at the check-in desk, but this place is decent, especially if you’re traveling. It’s just off exit 180, and I’ve stayed in much worse places for a lot more money. They have coffee downstairs 24/7 with flavored creamer.
