The Royal Inn & Suites

For a budget-friendly motel, this is the nicest one I’ve stayed in. The lobby and building are nice, the room was clean, and the front desk staff were friendly. It was midwinter, though, and the heat was set to 58 when we got to the room. I turned it up to 90, but it took several hours to get comfortable. Still, I’d highly recommend staying here, especially on a budget.

I booked the Royal Inn and suites on Gilchrist Road in Akron, OH, after seeing an 8.4 rating on Hotels.com, but it’s nowhere near an 8.4-star hotel. It’s a Section 8/DSS emergency housing hotel. While unloading the car, I saw a man with very poor hygiene come out to smoke by the main doors. He coughed and spat a literal puddle of awful liquid on the ground. The rooms were clean, but extremely bare and basic, with nearly everything bolted down. Breakfast was also very disappointing: no eggs or breakfast meat, candy cereal, little fruit, no yogurt, just bread and a toaster. I’d never stay here again.

We had a quiet, comfortable stay and will visit again. The place is clean and nicely refurbished, with welcoming, helpful staff. The newly marbled shower area was nice, and the soaps smelled wonderful. Breakfast had plenty of options, it’s pet friendly and close to the highway, and shops and restaurants are 10-15 minutes away in either direction. A few things to know: the Wi-Fi connection in our room was weak, the TVs aren’t compatible with Fire Stick, though there are plenty of viewing options, including football. Also, get cash for the vending machines while staff are at the desk, since nobody can give change at night until the next day. I’d give it 8/10.

There’s plenty of space for trucks and buses, and the staff were helpful about a late checkout. The room looked like it had been remodeled and was really nice, with a very comfortable bed. The price was affordable, and I was impressed. I’d definitely stay again.
