The staff were terrific, very friendly, and left the rooms sparkling. The beds are comfortable, and the local farmers market soap and shampoo smell great. The inn itself is lovely, with real wood and granite in the rooms, solid wood and leather chairs in the common area, and cow skin rugs throughout. The attached restaurant, spicewood, serves good food, though it’s a 2-3 minute walk away. There’s no free breakfast. The WiFi is extremely slow and restrictive. Streaming buffers, Zoom stutters a lot, and a firewall blocks YouTube comments and filters out some content. Standard room desks are much too small, and there are no elevators. For one night it’s fine, but for a few nights I’d consider a large chain hotel for breakfast and steadier WiFi. It’s a beautiful place and worth trying once, though I’m not sure I’d book again.

I had a reservation, but checking in took far too long. No one was at the desk, so after waiting 10 minutes I knocked on the general manager’s office door. He said he couldn’t help and didn’t know where the desk clerk was, then shut himself back in his office. Another 10-15 minutes went by. Calls to the front desk just rang, so I knocked again and asked if he could call the clerk or check me in himself. He said he didn’t know how, but would try to find her. He walked down the hall, and she showed up a few minutes later. It’s hard to believe a hotel’s general manager would see a guest waiting to check in and say he couldn’t help. Don’t stay here.

The bathroom felt a little cramped, but the rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable.

This place has a cozy Texas feel, with great food at the restaurant next door. If you’re expecting a commercial hotel experience, you’ve picked the wrong spot. It’s more about Texas hospitality and good food. Breakfast could be a bit better, but the dining area’s vibe makes up for it. I had a great first visit and might stay longer next time to enjoy all the amenities. I’m not sure why people leave negative reviews.

The property was quiet, and I liked its location in a good part of town. I stayed here because I wanted to photograph a comet at Big Bend National Park after the other hotels and lodges had been booked for months. I enjoyed some of the stay, though it could have been better. My bed was comfortable and the shower had amazing water, but it could use shelves for soap. The rooms need updating, and the shower door made the hallway by the entrance feel cramped. There were no USB charging ports by the nightstand, and the outlet there was hanging out of the wall. The AC fan wasn’t powerful, though the room stayed cool. Housekeeping kept pounding on doors in the morning, which was rough after my long nighttime drive back to the hotel. I also didn’t understand why I was charged city and state taxes on the room.
