Hotel Millwright

I didn’t even know this modern hotel and restaurant was here in main Amana, attached to the old woolen mill. I live nearby, so trying their burger was an easy trip. I’d read it was in the running for best burger 2026, and the double bacon cheeseburger in bloody mary sauce was delicious. It was cooked to order and came to me "to go" after I’d missed the original ordering time on Sunday. The waitress managed to get the chef to make one anyway, which I appreciated. It was served in a pretty unusual way, cut in half with two skewers, each end stacked with a cube of cheese, sliced ham, pickles, and a green chili, all set in spicy bloody mary mix in the container. Seasoned fries came along too, and they were great. It took me two days to finish both the burger and the fries. The staff were courteous and accommodating. I’ll come back and stay here sometime. This place is awesome, and I clearly need to get out more.

The layout gave my wife and me a lot of privacy, with the rooms spaced out so it never felt like we were right on top of other guests. We stayed a couple of weeks before Christmas for holiday shopping and stocking stuffers, and the stay was comfortable, quiet, and memorable. We’d happily return. The old mill’s character has been preserved while the rooms still feel modern, with updated finishes and thoughtful lighting. Nothing about it felt forced. Our room was immaculately clean, from the floors to the crisp linens, and felt carefully looked after. We’d planned to have breakfast there, but a snowstorm seemed to keep most of the kitchen staff from getting in. That was understandable in the weather and didn’t take away from the stay.

For a traditional, humble community like the Amana Colonies, this is a remarkably clean and well done place to stay. The front desk staff we met were consistently friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The room looked newly renovated, was very clean, and had a beautiful bathroom on par with many five star hotels. I noticed only tiny things, like some paint on the inside of the door that could use a touch up after travelers bump or scratch it. There are a couple of other small refinements that could make the rooms even better, and I’d be glad to discuss those with management if they call. The room quality, staff, amenities, and location all rate highly for me.

The hotel is perfectly placed in the Amanas, with lots of shops an easy walk away. We were there for my niece’s wedding, and the rooms were charming, clean, and full of history to look at. The whole weekend, from check-in through the restaurant, wedding venue, and brunch, went smoothly. Food, staff, and the overall experience were top level. I’m a tough critic, and only two bartenders’ attitudes bothered me. I corrected that quickly, and the rest was a true five star experience. Special thanks to Hunter, who was a great staff member and also helped a family member clear snow off her car. Everyone at the hotel was warm, welcoming, and friendly. We’ll definitely be back, and I’ll share our experience with others.
