The room I had was small, so keep that in mind if you’re bringing a lot of oversized luggage. Still, this is a good affordable option for a short stay. The check-in setup caused a problem for me, though. On the night I was due to arrive, there was a very loud heavy metal concert inside, and check-in was at the bar counter. I went back to Anchorage to wait it out so I wouldn’t risk damaging my ears. The clerk outside kindly gave me an approximate end time. I didn’t mind waiting, but you may not have the same flexibility. It might be worth calling ahead to ask about events at the bar.
The burgers were real hand-pressed patties, not frozen ones, and the sweet potato fries looked hand-cut and came out perfectly crispy. My husband really liked the onion rings with his burger, too. The bartender was kind and attentive and made us a great meal. We’re glad we stopped at the Brown Bear Saloon. It has a cozy, local feel and was decorated all over for the holidays. It’s a new favorite for us.
For the price, this was a great deal, especially with Anchorage being so expensive. The room was fine, with the essentials and a clean, comfortable bed. Getting to it felt a bit sketchy, though, with rickety outdoor stairs and a small hallway, and the room itself was small. The saloon is basic and no-frills. Food choices there weren’t great if you’re vegetarian. They were out of the black bean burger, leaving only cheese pizza and pretzels.
This place really feels like home to me. I’m lucky and privileged to count the staff as friends and the community as my home. As someone born and raised in Alaska, I’d recommend it. You’re lucky to get time here and have such a great experience.
I spent a week at the Brown Bear. My room was clean and comfortable, with a private bath, refrigerator, microwave, and comfortable bed. The owner, staff, and patrons at the saloon were friendly and welcoming. The food was good, there was a great beer selection, and the value for the price is hard to beat. I’m looking forward to returning again and again.
