We were booked here through Alaska Tours and will be back at the end of the week because our last night before going home is already booked. The property is nice enough, but it's showing a lot of wear and needs updating. The breakfast was a mess: at 8:40, with the advertised end time at 9, there were no eggs, only a few cold sausages, no coffee in the machine, no milk, no forks, and the cold drink machine was broken. When I asked for fresh food, they said they'd finished cooking. Eventually they made a pitcher of ice water so I could eat cold sausage and muffins. That's not much of a free breakfast if you have to arrive at least half an hour early. The neighborhood has homeless people wandering around all day and night. The place could be nice, but it needs work.
What a nightmare. We stopped by earlier to drop our bags since early check-in wasn't possible, and that was fine. We asked about everything then, too. At check-in, I asked them to confirm the room was feather-free because my baby and I have a bad allergy. First they couldn't confirm, then someone from housekeeping checked. Over the radio we heard, “it's all feathers,” so the response was that it was probably down, sorry. But they'd said this morning and weeks ago when we booked that they could do it. Then a housekeeper apologized and said she'd confirmed it was just cotton. They'd also promised a pack.n play for the baby, but now said whoever last used it broke it and there wasn't another. Another thing they'd said they could provide weeks ago and that morning, but couldn't. We got a room number and key, though by then we wanted to leave. I opened the door to change the baby and found someone else's room, with a backpack of luggage and a messed-up comforter. Horrifying, and a serious safety concern. When I reported it, they said I was the only one assigned there and their records showed the previous guest had checked out. Well, they hadn't. They said it was clean and free of down, but clearly hadn't checked either. The negligence and lack of apology were astounding. They moved us to another room, the first one off the lobby, which felt unsafe too since I already didn't feel safe there. They brought back pillows they'd removed because they thought they were down, even though several people had handled them and they'd been on the floor. Just change the pillowcases, what the hell. The room was disgusting, with things on the floor, no sign of vacuuming, and so much dust I could barely breathe. The TV was falling off the wall and the dressers were badly damaged and falling apart. We'd had enough and asked for a refund. They refused. What a waste of an establishment. It's run abysmally, the customer service is in the basement, and it's thoroughly disgusting and unsafe.
We had a reservation, and when our flight was delayed we called ahead. They said it would be fine. We arrived at 1:30am as we'd told them, but there was no room for us, even though our reservation was still in the system. They did nothing to help. We had to find somewhere to stay in the early morning, in an unfamiliar area, after paying $35 for an Uber ride in the freezing cold. All they could say was that they wouldn't charge us for the stay. Are you kidding me? Horrible service and place. And what a sweet frickin response, blaming maintenance. It wasn't just the staff. The person on the phone was rude and unhelpful too. I'll do everything I can to make sure people know how crappy the service is.
The staff were kind and easy to deal with, and the fresh-baked cookies at the desk were a nice touch. Check-in was simple, and with only two floors, it's easy to find your way around. Breakfast was decent, with the expected eggs, sausage links and patties, bacon, yogurt, cereal, bagels, and toaster. One morning there were only limited options, though that may have been out of their hands. My room was okay at best and didn't seem to have been fully turned over. There were popcorn crumbs beside the bed, bathroom exhaust fans caked with dust, a used coffee packet from the previous guest, and dirty plastic ware behind the microwave. The lamp outlets were so worn that charging cables fell out. They hadn't replaced the toilet paper either. I understand avoiding waste, but using a roll left by another guest isn't appealing. The location is decent for what's within their control. Anchorage's homeless population remains a challenge, mostly downtown, so some people may feel uneasy walking around nearby. For the price, it wasn't terrible, but I hope the cleaning staff will be more thorough.
The bed was comfortable and the room had plenty of space. But the door was broken, and breakfast needs work. Even basic things like coffee and milk weren't available.
