My Place Hotel - Anchorage, AK

The shuttle listing on the hotel website was frustrating. My daughter called to arrange an airport pickup and was told there was no shuttle available. I later noticed a note lower on the site saying service might not be available, but putting the amenity up front without that caveat felt misleading. We also returned three days later with our daughter and third grandchild, on reservations made months earlier, and were first assigned rooms that hadn’t been serviced. On our earlier visit, my husband and I were traveling with two young grandchildren after a flight arrived nine hours late, around 6:30 a.m. We went straight to the hotel hoping to shower and rest, but a very grumpy woman at the desk said check-in had closed at 4 a.m. When I pointed out that we had paid for the room, she got annoyed, walked into a neighboring room, and refused to speak to me again. After we got home, I called the manager about that first encounter. Before apologizing, she asked what I wanted her to do. I said I would fire the employee if she worked for me. The manager said she would treat it as a teaching moment and eventually offered an apology that sounded insincere. The location is good and there are some nice amenities, but customer service seems to matter very little here. I’ve traveled often over my 70-plus years, and this was the worst hotel experience I’ve had. It was the first time I felt compelled to write a review.

The rooms were clean, and the staff were really nice, friendly, and helpful. There was a security guard on duty, visibly keeping watch and helping the place feel safe.

We were pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the price was. The hotel was quiet and clean, with plenty of amenities both in our room and in the lobby. No complaints.

The trip got off to a rough start. I’d arranged a pickup at the rail depot a couple weeks ahead, then called when I arrived at 10:15 p.m. to confirm. They confirmed, but after I waited a while and called again, I was told the driver was at airport gate 6. We didn’t reach the hotel until about 11:30, and check-in took a while. I was assigned room 118, and the attendant said she’d never checked anyone into it before. The person leaving the shift said she hadn’t either because the room wasn’t operational, with the TV and kitchen not working. I was exhausted and said fine as long as the AC worked. I’d booked two rooms with two queens each, but the second room, I think 301, had only one queen. When I called the desk, the employee either couldn’t or wouldn’t switch it. We ended up with one room that wasn’t fully working and had to sleep on the floor in the other. We’d already been delayed an hour getting to the hotel. Great start to vacation.
