Potawatomi Inn & Cabins

The dining room and the foyer leading to it were stunning, especially for anyone into nature or history. We came for the Toboggan Run, then stayed another night to take in the views, hike, and visit the nature center. The kids also loved the Monster Truck Museum about 20 miles away. This state park has made us want to explore more parks around our state. The inn itself was beautiful, with thoughtful, authentic decor and a warm, welcoming feel. There was a blazing fireplace with a safety screen, and the rooms and facilities were very clean. Thanks for a wonderful visit!

The lake view was gorgeous, even with the overcast sky that night. The room, though, was tiny, and there was a nightstand on only one side of the bed. When we left, we found someone else’s trash and pills under the bed. The showerhead leaked, and the whole room needed a thorough cleaning. I’d been looking forward to the hot tub, but the pool and hot tub area was filthy and gritty, with debris across the bottoms. The sauna was even worse, with mold. The arcade games needed quarters, which I expected, but the “library” had fewer books than I have at home. Even with Wi-Fi, I couldn’t get anything to work, not even maps or Google, so it was basically pointless. I’d expected the historic side of the hotel to be nice, quiet, and pretty, but that wasn’t what we found.

I love getting out for an early sunrise over Lake James or a quiet walk through the woods before dinner. The location is a big part of what keeps bringing me back, with the lake, hiking and biking trails, and plenty of outdoor activities right there in Pokagon State Park. I’ve stayed at the Potawatomi Inn and Conference Center many times, and it’s always felt like a peaceful little break in nature without losing comfort or convenience. The rooms are clean, cozy, and well cared for, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The indoor pool and hot tub are great for winding down after a day outside, and the on-site restaurant serves good food with lovely lake views. It’s also worked well for family gatherings and small conferences, everything runs smoothly and feels warm and inviting. Potawatomi Inn is my go-to getaway in Indiana, and every visit reminds me why I return.

We were surprised to learn we had to pay separately to enter the park after booking an inn room. With those prices, I thought it would be included. The food wasn’t that great either, and the room had no mini refrigerator, despite the online listing saying it came with one. I planned this trip for my sister’s birthday and was excited for my first historic inn stay, but that feeling didn’t last long. After shopping all day, we were ready to use the hot tub and were told it was closed for maintenance. There was no mention of compensation, just an apology. The room was dirty, with a used Kleenex behind the nightstand and dust and something sticky built up on top. The TV was unplugged and wouldn’t work until we reset the power strip, but its cord wouldn’t reach the wall outlet, which could have been a concern. Cold air leaked in through the window and the ceiling light flickered. Staff were nice and took care of it, but I doubt we’ll book again.
