Wyndham Garden Ankeny/Des Moines

I still don't know why my reservations were canceled. It seemed like there was a rift between the two parties involved, and it had nothing to do with me. I'm from out of town, and I was upset that the reservation was canceled automatically. On Wednesday, March 4, I learned my booking might have been canceled because I'd reserved through a travel group. At 2:44 pm CT I called the reservation line to check. The man who answered asked if I'd booked with the group. I said I thought I had, but wasn't sure. He told me the reservations were already canceled and hung up without checking my name or confirmation number. Worried I'd still be charged, I called again Friday, March 6, at 11:22 am CT. The same man asked if I was with the group. I asked to confirm using the confirmation number and gave my last name. He said yes. When I said I didn't appreciate the automatic cancellation, he shouted, “you should talk to (redacted), he’s the one who canceled.” Then he thanked me and hung up again. Right after that, I called the front desk and asked for the manager on duty. The person hesitated, then said the manager wasn't available. I was frustrated and asked why he'd hung up instead of offering to make a new reservation. He said I'd called to confirm the cancellation, which was true. I asked again, and then he started yelling. I'm shocked someone in hospitality would act this way. Be warned, staff at this location may not be properly trained in customer service.

Dustin (name?) was kind when checking us in and moving us to another room after the lights didn't work. The place was affordable and did the job. There was a lot of mildew, apparently from the swimming pool. Still, it'd be a fantastic spot for a sports team, with a huge pool and great lounge areas for parents. Even the exercise room has a rack!

The staff were fabulous, and the restaurant was fantastic. Our room was clean, but the carpet was badly worn and long past its lifetime. The desk was missing legs on one side and had to be propped up on the dresser. Sometimes we couldn't get the door to open. There was an alarm going off constantly in the lobby, which took away from the whole group's enjoyment. I expected highway noise, but this was like being on the infield at Daytona Speedway. Traffic woke me so often I felt like I was staying at a Truckstop.

The layout was a little confusing at first, but we got used to it easily. The pool area was warm, though the water and its cleanliness made up for that. The location is perfect for Ankeny. We had a wonderful weekend, with clean rooms and AC’s/refrigerators that worked well. The staff were great and very helpful. Thanks again for the pleasant stay.
