Getting the appliances to work can turn into a hide-and-seek game, with the microwave, for example, and you’re “It.” The TV wasn’t ready to use either: everything was unplugged or disconnected, and the outlets and connections were hard to reach, so you couldn’t just pick up the remote and browse channels. The fridge may be unplugged when you arrive, which means waiting a while for it to get cold enough for perishables. Bring your own towels and toilet paper, and don’t count on a secure room or a peaceful night’s rest.

In this housing crisis, family friendly places like this help keep people from becoming homeless. I have friends who’ve lived here for a while, and they’re as happy as they can be until they find permanent housing. The owner is friendly and helps people when he can, while also being careful about unwanted traffic and renters. The rooms are clean, appliances work well, and it’s quiet. It’s also good for people just passing through. Just be careful not to check in at the place across the street by mistake.

This place is a dump and should be bulldozed. The mattresses have no cushion left, and the sheets have hair and stains. There’s mold on the walls and paint peeling off the ceiling. They don’t clean the rooms, just make the bed and call it done. Management acts like they care, but doesn’t.

Our first room was already occupied, and the replacement had stained pillowcases, what looked like unwashed sheets with pubic hair between them, and lights missing bulbs. There was mold in the bathroom, a stained towel, a smoke detector hanging off the wall without its battery, and an air conditioner plug with exposed wires. Some holes in the walls were unpainted, and plastic bags had been stuffed into others. The neighbors made the night miserable: one side had people renting their company by the hour, which we could hear through the thin walls, while the other played pounding music until 3 a.m. Smoke came through a hole in the wall. We used a chair to brace the door because the deadbolt was missing. All this for $100 a night. At least our car wasn’t broken into. I wouldn’t put my worst enemy here.

For California’s crazy prices, this place is okay. The location is close to a BART Park & Ride lot, and when management is around, they’re attentive. The TV and remotes were fine, but the Wi-Fi was weak or nonexistent. My chair was falling apart. Towels and linens were changed every day.
