Grandstay Hotel & Suites Appleton

We rented two rooms for the family. One had an AC that didn’t work, but the hotel promptly moved our family members to another room. It’s pet friendly, and the free breakfast included eggs and bacon or potatoes, along with the usual continental items. The beds were fairly uncomfortable, which is why I’m not giving it five stars. Still, it’s a nice little hotel and a good value.

The room was nice, and the value was amazing, but the sheets had an old stain. We could hear the person in the next room snoring, talking, and playing music, so the walls weren’t very soundproof and the headboards may share a wall. The pool is tiny, and the hot tub needs maintenance: some jets weren’t working, and there was debris in the water, so it needed cleaning.

The pool was tiny, though we still enjoyed it, and the hotel is very, very outdated. Our beds were small, there were cigarette burns in the curtains, and some lights were out. The room was at least decently clean. We’d hoped for better after reading the positive reviews, and the low prices were appealing, but you get what you pay for. The front desk woman had her child out front when we checked in, and the child was there again the next day. I’m a mom too and understand not having childcare, but it stood out. Around 4:30 p.m., we asked the man at the desk about the advertised happy-hour bar special. He was abrasive, texting instead of opening the bar on time, and said he was “too busy” and would get to it if we wanted. Having the front desk person also tend the bar seems inefficient. At 4 a.m. the fire alarm went off. It was a false alarm, but with kids, especially our 11-month-old, it was frustrating and disappointing. That may not have been the hotel’s fault, but it capped off the experience. The continental breakfast gets good reviews here, but it was powdered eggs and basics, nothing special. I wish we’d checked the negative reviews as well as the positive ones before booking.

The rooms were nice, clean, and had soft beds, so the price was pretty good for what you get. The hallways smelled really funky. The heater and AC smelled awful and only worked sometimes. Overall, the hotel was pretty good.
