The advertised two-bedroom place had only one bedroom, and several basics were a problem. The driveway hadn't been cleared, so it felt easy to slip in the snow. The TV didn't work, there was no bathroom heat, and we had no internet. Having to go into town just to get online was a major inconvenience. I told owner Brian Hammer about the internet, and he said we should leave if we were unhappy. We were hundreds of miles from home and couldn't find another place nearby, so we were stuck. He also refused to discount the stay. Brian Hammer said his bill was paid automatically and blamed the outage on the weather after contacting the provider. But CenturyLink told me that Brian Hammer, owner of the Royal Bear Lodge in Arroya Seco, had not paid the $352.04 internet bill and service wouldn't be restored until he did. Terrible service at the Royal Bear Lodge. Don't stay here.

My family lives on the road beside the Royal Bear, the house on Hondo-Seco Road in Arroyo Seco, N.M. It used to be a bed and breakfast, and the owner later sold it. These days it seems to be doing well. I often see people there from different states.

Getting away from the city's stress was exactly what I needed. The little house tucked into the mountain foothills was so cozy, and the whole stay felt calming and relaxing.
