Spark by Hilton Artesia

I’m hopeful Expedia will refund me. I’d thought I booked through the hotel, but when no confirmation email arrived, I panicked and called. The front desk found my reservation and emailed it to me. The next day I needed to cancel, but there was no cancellation option in the email. I called the hotel, and Kat explained I’d booked through a third party and needed to contact them. She was really helpful and went above and beyond to help a stranger sort it all out. Thanks to Kat and the Spark staff.

I expected much better for the price Hilton charges. Hilton recently bought this landmark, and after my last visit I’m less enthusiastic about the Hilton/Spark branding. Behind the recent touch-ups, the property has slipped on the details I expect from Hilton. USB chargers in the room didn’t work, half the bulbs were out, weeds lined the sidewalks, and some landscaping fixtures were over 12 inches tall. The ice machine was broken, and the refrigerator didn’t work either. On the earlier visit, staff were friendly and accommodating, as they had been before Hilton bought it. The bagel breakfast was great, and the room was clean and comfortable. I believe Hilton will make the needed fixes for people who expect those details from the brand. I hope so.

Nothing special, just a decent hotel. Check-in was easy and the staff were friendly. The price seemed a little high, but not unreasonable. My bed was very clean, though the floor was a bit dirty, which is why I took off a star. The building layout is kind of strange. I’d stay again if I were passing through.

The rooms have been newly renovated and are pleasant, and there are plenty of food options nearby. Parking was great. It’s very convenient being right by the highway, though you do hear road noise. The entrance was a little hard to find, but not too bad. I’m very pleased with this hotel.
