Ashford Motel

I came to the area to visit UConn as a prospective grad student and had planned to stay three nights. For a cheap motel, I only needed the basics, but room 14 was grimy, with stained bedding, odd marks on the walls, and crumbs under the chair cushions. I could have put up with that. Then around 2 AM, while watching TV, I saw something run across the bed. I hit it with the remote and found it was a bed bug. I spent hours searching for more and didn't spot any, but I couldn't stop worrying about an infestation. I tried to get another room, but the office was locked. When I called, the person told me to come back in the morning and hung up. I had no car, and the motel was isolated in the middle of the night, so I stayed. I was worried about sleeping in the bed and barely managed to doze in the desk chair. I had put my belongings on the desk after reading online that elevation might help keep bugs away. I had a meeting at UConn the next morning, so I really needed sleep. When the office opened around 7 AM, I told them I was leaving. They refunded the two nights I wouldn't use, which I appreciated. I moved to the Inn on Storrs, which was far better, and frantically disinfected my things and washed whatever I could. A bed bug is where I draw the line, even in a cheap place. With the bugs handled and a bit more cleaning, this could be a nice little motel, but for now I'd tell people to look elsewhere. The savings aren't worth it. The other reviews also make it seem like room quality varies a lot. Most of the room photos I've seen look nothing like the one I had. Make of that what you will.
