The setting is lovely, close enough to town to run to a store in minutes but far enough out to enjoy nature. In summer you’d be right by Lake Superior, and a room with a balcony would be worth considering. There’s also an artesian spring with great water. We didn’t make it to the Sandbar Restaurant because it closed before we got back from exploring, though it was good to know they offer gluten-free choices. The inn has a distinctive design, with charming room finishes and lots of surprising angles and details. We stayed in the smallest of the five rooms on the third floor. It was simple, but well done, and the off-season price was good. A sporting goods shop and restaurant/bar are downstairs, with more restaurant seating and presumably utilities on the second floor. A few minor hassles: there wasn’t a check-in desk or staff on site, so you’d need to contact someone at another business if you needed help. We managed without that. Only one half of an outlet by the bed worked. The elevator was so slow we carried our luggage on the stairs, and at first we thought it wasn’t working at all. More light in the room would’ve helped with packing.

It was easy to check in and out, and the room was clean, with beautiful views. The cafe and store attached were cozy, cute, and had delicious food. The shower was a standout, with both a waterfall and a regular showerhead. We met friends here for a weekend and had a great place to unwind. It had the useful feel of a hotel, but the rooms felt homey and upscale, with their own unusual shapes and character.

The building’s design is beautiful, and the value would be hard for another place to top. My family and I had an amazing stay, and it helped us decompress after a stressful work week. Everyone should give this gem a try at least once.

The view was great, but the meal was a letdown. Food was plain and bland, and my sandwich was just meat and cheese. You pretty much had to serve yourself, and they even wanted to charge for a tea refill.

We were in room 3 and loved it. The bed was a comfortable king, and the deck looked out over the lake. There were ceramic coffee mugs, proper wine glasses, and robes for the jacuzzi tub. The room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. Breakfast sandwiches from the Sandbar restaurant in the building were amazing. Can’t wait to return!
