For a mom-and-pop motel in a small town like Au Gres, the price seemed fair, and the owners were fine. Our room was very clean and nice and cool when we got there, though the lobby and hallways were warm. Breakfast was just so-so, but I wasn't expecting much more for what we paid. We didn't use the pool or hot tub, but they looked clean. I think some people may be judging the motel too harshly, especially with maybe only one other hotel nearby. It is in Au Gres, not Tawas, as one reviewer said.

The room had a number of problems beyond the check-in experience. The hallways and lobby felt close to 90 degrees, the hot tub wasn't heated or switched on, and torn plastic was still on the windows in the pool area, which closed at 8 pm. The air conditioner ran for only a few minutes at a time, and the alarm, fridge, and microwave were unplugged. If you leave the room, don't expect the air to stay on, they turn it off. After just an hour in bed I was bitten by something. By morning there were three clusters of bites. I never saw any bugs, and I can only hope they weren't bed bugs. I was trying to be nice about asking for fresh sheets because both beds had long, brown human hairs over five inches long. I went to the desk and said I'd change the sheets myself. The man there yelled for his wife and, in very broken English, got upset while talking about me with me standing there. He said he would cancel it right then if it wasn't good enough. His wife motioned for me to come to the room, and I kept telling her I wasn't angry and was happy to do the work. On the way, she said she worked very hard and kept the rooms clean. When she saw my 20lb white hypoallergenic dog, she seemed afraid and blamed the hair on him. I pulled the hairs off the bed and showed her they were clearly human. She rambled about a compound and how hard she worked, while I kept saying I hadn't questioned her work ethic. Her husband came in just as we finished making the beds, still upset, and asked if it was taken care of. I said yes and thanked them. About an hour later he called the room to ask again if everything was okay. We won't stay here again. The owners struck me as extremely cheap and rude. People in the area should stop giving this man money so a quality business person can buy the place, give it much-needed TLC, and treat guests with respect.

Breakfast was a cold plain bagel, with no toppings and no coffee. The toilet seats were coming loose, wallpaper was peeling off the room walls, the AC seemed unreliable, and the outside doors didn't lock. It was quiet, and at least it was available. Sadly, this is the kind of lodge I'd only stay at for one night if I were desperate.

The room wasn't clean, so I went across to the dollar store for Lysol spray and wipes. I stayed only because there wasn't really another choice. The woman was very nice, but the man wasn't. The couple seemed to live behind the front desk, and I saw them washing linens in the guest washer and dryer. Believe me, the rating is accurate.

The breakfast was old bagels and two kinds of stale cereal, and the coffee pot was out of order. There was a bad smell that stuck to the room and to me even after I left, and the customer service was awful too. They ought to put signs on the things that actually work. If you're deciding whether to stay here, I'd take a ditch or a tent by the road instead. Au Gres Inn is much nicer and more reasonably priced.
