We have stayed at several Home2 Suites around the country and usually had good experiences, but this Austin/Cedar Park location felt more like a lower quality roadside motel. We wouldn't choose it again. On arrival, the front desk had to sort out confusion because our room wasn't marked clean in the system. After a long travel day with our two kids and dog, we waited while the attendant tried to find our reservation. We'd booked a king room with a pull out couch for two adults and two children, but there was no bedding for the sofa bed. When I asked at the desk, I was told they were at capacity and might not have any available, even though our reservation was clearly for four people. The building felt run down. Our room had broken lamps, visible water damage, mold in the bathroom, and noticeable stains on the couch cushions and bedding. Cigarette butts were scattered outside. Small maintenance and housekeeping issues like these add up and really affect the stay. Breakfast fell short too. They served food on paper products instead of dishes, didn't have whole milk or tea bags, the coffee was poor, and the hot water dispenser was only lukewarm. As Hilton Honors members, we also didn't receive recognition like bottled water or small welcome amenities, which other locations commonly offer.
The hotel is a decent place to stay, though it's one of the area's older, established properties and the exterior shows it. I lost the room I'd picked in the Hilton app when I declined the virtual key, and ended up in Room 316 instead. It was acceptable, but a couple of things seemed to come from ordinary wear and tear. The loveseat cushions were worn down so badly that I sank low when sitting and had trouble getting back up. Its couch bed frame also had a broken spring sticking out between the cushion and armrest, so I had to watch that it didn't catch my clothes. The toilet was the other problem. Water would intermittently run back into the bowl, likely because the tank seal was worn. As it slowly shut off, it made a loud squealing sound that woke me at night and made it hard to fall asleep again. I told the front desk about both issues, but was told maintenance wouldn't be available until Monday. Hopefully they've been fixed since.
We've usually made Home2 our go-to hotel, but now we're talking about staying elsewhere next time we're in town. We recently had a lovely stay at a Home2 in Highland Ranch, CO, with no issues except that same funky linen smell. At Home2 - Cedar Park, TX, we got our keys and stepped out of the stairwell onto the 4th floor. A strong musty smell hit us right away. It was better in room 424, but only for a few minutes. When we turned on the A/C, another awful smell came out. We looked around and found MOLD growing in the unit. We went back downstairs, showed the desk clerk a photo, and asked for a different room on another floor. The clerk showed VERY LITTLE CONCERN. We got a room on the 3rd floor. It was better, but not great. Whatever they use to launder the linens has a harsh, unpleasant smell that doesn't sit well with me. I'm not sure what the deal is, but I think it's time we moved on.
As a longtime Hilton customer, this was my first stay at this location. The lobby smelled musty, and that smell continued in the room. The room was spacious with plenty of drawers and cabinets, and had a 3/4 sized refrigerator. The beds were comfortable. The main reason for the low rating was the power outage. At 10:45 p.m., just as we were settling back into the room and my wife was showering, the power went out. Everything went completely dark, with no emergency lighting or announcements. After about 30 minutes in the dark, we went down to the lobby and asked the front desk when it might come back. He had no timeframe to give us. With the room already smelling from the A/C, we didn't want to stay in the dark as it warmed up without air conditioning and the odor probably got stronger. We packed up and told the desk we couldn't stay. The attendant apologized and said, "that's understandable, I will make sure your do not get charged for the night".
The bed setup was nowhere near what we asked for. We requested a Queen bed and got a room with what felt like a super single plus a fold out couch. They said a Queen was all they had left and offered linens for the couch so we could sleep there. Are you kidding me? Have you ever tried sleeping on a couch bed? I'd rather sleep on lava rock. It would be more comfortable, especially for the price we paid. Unbelievable. We'll never stay at this establishment again, even if every other option is unavailable. I'd sleep in my car before wasting my hard-earned money at this Hilton owned/affiliated property. There was a musty smell when we walked in, though it wasn't bad enough to be annoying.
