Residence Inn by Marriott Phoenix West/Avondale

I booked a one-bedroom suite through Expedia about six months ahead and paid in advance for a two-night stay. At check-in, I asked whether we could have a one-bedroom room with two beds. They said no other room was available because we'd paid such a low rate. I understand the risk of a prepaid booking, but that still felt like a poor way to treat someone who had committed to staying there. They assigned us a unit nearest the highway. I wouldn't stay here again.

The front desk service was great, and the bathroom was clean. The rest of the stay was just okay. There were food specks on the cupboard plates and debris left in the refrigerator, so the room could've been cleaned better. Outside traffic is horrendously loud, so bring earplugs if noise bothers you. I've stayed at airport Marriott hotels with 757s coming in that were quieter than this.

Most of the appliances in our room were broken, even though there was a “call use refrigerator” in there. The beds sagged in the middle, furniture was falling apart and had holes, and I found dust and mold in several places. For a fairly new hotel, it was filthy and worn down. They also don't offer coffee in the lobby around the clock like other locations. Management admitted they only put it out with the free breakfast and don't care about offering it the rest of the time. The location is poor, on a steep hill right beside I-10, and headlights shine into the rooms all night. It wasn't quiet, and in my opinion it wasn't kid friendly or safe. Staff were poorly trained and rude. I usually choose Marriott over Hilton, and I really wish I'd booked the Garden Inn next door. Its guests seemed to be enjoying themselves more. I can't find a positive word for this Residence Inn.

We came for a birthday party, and the rented room was spacious and private. There was also a secluded outdoor area. While we were there, we saw a man propose to a woman with a pretty little setup. It was lovely. The place had a fun feel, a pool, and a fireplace controlled from the wall. The kids enjoyed making s'mores outside. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and ready to help whenever we needed something.
