Baker City Blue Door Inn

I booked by phone at the last minute after a 12-hour drive from Moab, UT, without researching the place first. Arriving after 9:30 pm, I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming the main area felt. I stayed in the 'Grand Suite': a king bed with a memory foam mattress, a sitting area, a separate smaller room, and a private full bath. The room was neat and clean, with fresh-cut flowers in a vase, a thoughtful touch I loved. In the morning there was a choice of Nespresso pods, plus orange juice or pom, and bottled water. Around 7:30 am, breakfast was left outside my door: grapes and blueberries, Tillamook yogurt, and a muffin. The owners don’t live on site, but they live nearby if you need anything.

The Blue Door is in a lovely residential area, just a short walk from downtown shops and restaurants, and it’s clear they’ve put a lot of care into the place. You can park on the street, then use a coded door to enter. The elegant shared room also serves as the breakfast area, with bedrooms upstairs. Guests share two full bathrooms, one upstairs with a bathtub and one downstairs with a shower. Hospitality is a big part of the stay: I was offered refreshments when I arrived, and there’s a self-serve cafe upstairs. The sitting room has games, books, music, and local information. There’s even decanted wine to tempt you in the evening, plus a hearty home-cooked breakfast.

Right in the center of town, with lots of great places within walking distance. The staff and owner were so nice, and my room was super clean, with decor and design that took me back to a simpler time. They clearly put a lot of effort into it. It was a great place to stay on my journey across America for veterans!

Baker City is beautiful, and the Inn is in a perfect spot with everything within walking distance. We loved our two-day stay and thought the amenities were just right. We’re coming back for two more days in December to take the Sumpter Christmas Train Ride.
