Sunset Oceanfront Lodging

Sunset Motel has become part of our family’s holiday tradition, and after 60 years of visits, we still love coming back. We choose the original motel rooms because they hold so many memories for us, and they’re reasonably priced. The newer beachside addition costs a few dollars more and has an upgraded feel, with quick access to the sand. The peaceful property has wonderful views, and from most rooms the sunset is gorgeous, like God is showing off. The family atmosphere means a lot to us. I remember Grandma Judy, one of the original crew, checking us in 40-50 years ago, and she still visits now and then. Her granddaughter Kyra has taken up the baton and always makes our stay personal and meaningful. This is more than a place to sleep, it can become part of your family’s memories too. We never regret the trip to Bandon, and we’ll be back again and again.

We dropped in on a Friday afternoon in November without a reservation and got a really nice, unusually large king room. The bed was comfortable, and the balcony view was incredible. Breakfast was great too, with tasty heat-and-eat waffles, fruit, cereal, yogurt, and even lactose-free options. Sunset is family owned and run, and you can feel the pride in the place. There’s a card by the phone saying to call Jeff directly about any after-hours room problems. I met Jeff, who’s part of the family, as was the manager. We really enjoyed our night and plan to come back for a stay we’ve planned ahead.

I’ve been coming here for 40 years, but the prices feel too high now. The morning staff member is really nice, and the man on nights is very helpful. One of the younger owners, though, is snarky every time, and it makes me not want to return.

The ocean view rooms with private balconies were unreal, and I loved the hot tub, pool, and reasonable price. The people I met had a genuine, personal warmth, and this place turned into an unexpected highlight of my road trip. The coastline reminded me of parts of Italy, with an Oregon feel to the nature. The decor is dated and goofy in that small-town, non-corporate way, but I found it charming. If you’re after the dependable sterile feel and cleanliness of a mid-level chain, this may not be your spot, though I sometimes like that in other settings. For connecting with the awe of the Oregon coast, this place is tops.
