After hours on the road heading southwest from Oklahoma, we stopped at Denny’s and noticed the motel across the street. There was space for our truck and trailer in the gravel lot, and Sam let us park by our room, showing me where to take up four spots. He was very nice, and the price was great. We had three dogs but were charged for just one. The room could have used a vacuum, though the bedding and bathroom were clean, and there was a microwave and fridge. If you’re on a budget and just need a few hours’ sleep before getting back on the road, you don’t need a four- or five-star hotel. I’d stay here again.

The room looked like it hadn’t changed since the 1990s, with colorful carpet, wallpaper, and a cramped layout. But it was really clean. I’d take an outdated room over a dirty one, and I appreciated how carefully they kept everything clean, from the sheets and blankets to the baseboards, counters, and carpet.

The room was the worst I’ve ever stayed in. It was dirty, run down, and probably around 100 degrees when we got there. We switched on the AC, but it took several hours to cool things down. There was junk everywhere when we first arrived, too. Later in the night, someone played music with bass so loud it seemed to rumble everything. That may not have been the hotel’s fault, but it made an already awful stay worse. I don’t know if they have better rooms, but I’m worried we may have picked up bed bugs. We’d arrived late after trying to drive as far as possible, and chose the cheapest place in Barstow hoping to go straight to bed. You get what you pay for, man.
