A year ago we gave this hotel five stars, but now we're thinking we may need another place for future Battle Creek visits. The check-in staff were extremely friendly, and the bed was very comfortable. The room was nice but needs a deep clean: dirty dishes in the cupboard, bad water spots on the shower glass, bathroom corners that need attention, and a toilet that needs cleaning. Breakfast was awful. There were only a few oatmeal packets, no cereal, bread, yogurt, or fruit, so I wouldn't call it breakfast. The woman working there seemed more interested in talking with coworkers, though I guess there wasn't much to do without food to put out. The pool was closed, which we knew when we booked.
The parking lot was covered in ankle-deep snow and slush when I arrived in the mid-20s, with no salt and no recent plowing. I had to haul my 35lb bag through it to the lobby. Check-in itself was fine. Elle/El, the young clerk, was kind and thorough, and gave me keys to room 213 or 214 on the second floor. In the first room, after taking off my shoes to keep the carpet dry, I noticed a dried vomit puddle that looked vacuumed over, with the outer ring still visible. Disgusting and a biohazard. Elle moved me to room 201, but that room also had serious problems: ripped trash liners, no toilet paper, long dark human hairs on every towel, and a slow shower drain that left me standing in two inches of water. Brown streaks covered the walls, possibly from heavy smoking or liquid thrown there. The shower had a large buildup of Serratia marcescens, a pink bacteria film on the walls and grout, especially below and near the shower head. The tiles above it were pristine, which made the water and poor upkeep seem clear. I travel frequently for work as a Marriott BonVoy member and have to stay at hotels all over the country. This was beyond unacceptable. I left early Thursday, 01/08/2026, and drove four and a half hours home rather than spend another night there. I still had to pay for a night I wasn't in the room. I also cancelled an 11 night reservation at a TownPlace Suites in Dallas, TX as soon as I got home. The stay destroyed my faith in Marriott as a whole. When I contacted the hotel about the problems, general manager Catherine Fraizer was condescending and dismissive. I hope my concerns really do get passed on to leadership, Catherine.
We'd driven ten hours from north carolina for my wife's mother's funeral, so we really appreciated the help. After we'd put some of our things in the room, the lock stopped working and our dogs were stuck inside. The woman at the desk was awesome: she got us another room and called James from maintenance. Though he wasn't on site, James arrived in under ten minutes and got us into the room quickly. Great service and a nice place.
The alarms kept going off and nobody apologized. The first fire alarm was around 3pm and everyone evacuated, which was understandable. A second false alarm sounded in the evening with different staff on duty, then another at 2:30am and several more after that. I was completely woken up and stayed up all night. Other people were awake too and started making noise. The shifts clearly weren't communicating, and I don't know if staff knew how to reset the system or got professional help after the second alarm. If they had, maybe the third and the rest wouldn't have happened. Can guests trust the alarm and respond properly if there's a real fire? I don't think so. Nobody trusts it here anymore. This was an awful, unprofessional experience, and it didn't feel safe or restful.
We've just finished our second stay, this time for two weeks with our dog, and were extremely satisfied. The amenities work especially well for longer visits, and complimentary breakfast changes each day with tasty choices. Ms. Jan in the kitchen is amazing. Everyone provides great service with warm smiles, conversation, and laughter, while also respecting your privacy when you need it. I highly recommend TownePlace to travelers and people visiting family and friends.
