Lakes-N-Trails Motel

We spent August 12, 2016 here while exploring this part of Michigan, and this little mom-and-pop motel was exactly what we needed as a place to sleep. It's an older place, but cared for with a lot of love. Our room was small with two queen beds, and very clean, with fresh-smelling bedding. After a day of hiking, the shower was especially welcome. I've recommended it to friends and would stay again.

The manager, or maybe the owner, was really nice and accommodating. Our room was huge, with a full kitchen and dining area, plus a spacious bedroom, closet, and bathroom. It was clean, had comfortable beds, and gave us plenty of space. Convenient for getting around while we toured Benzie County.

I booked a room on Monday for that weekend, then had to cancel on Wednesday. Because the cancellation wasn't within 24 hours of booking or at least 7 days before the stay, I was told I'd be charged $160 and some change. I could understand the fee and accept it, but the way the office manager handled it was uncalled for. She was rude, insulting, and demeaning. She said she'd call back “shortly,” but three hours went by without a call, so I tried again and got no answer. At the four-hour mark she answered and said I was interrupting her while she was trying to solve my issue. Then she said she wouldn't help resolve it “because policy says I don't have to.” She blamed the third-party booking site for the fee, but when I called them, they said the hotel had discretion over it. Staff who are rude, hateful, and lie will never get my business.

For $150, this was way overpriced. The room smelled horrible, and the water pressure was so low in all the rooms that showering was impossible. The double-bed rooms are tiny, with nowhere to put a suitcase or anything. Definitely not worth it. Save your money and go somewhere else.
