SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western Bettendorf

The room was fine, but the TV remote was broken, and the hot tub my family chose this place for wasn’t working. It was covered over, so it didn’t look like it was just closed for cleaning. Things happen, I understand. Update: Breakfast only runs until 9, weekends included. I arrived at 8:55 and most of it had already been put away. The manager(?) was friendly and offered to make me something. In the end, if you want a cheap stay without bells and whistles, this is the place.

This hotel was disgustingly filthy. The manager had no Clorox wipes, just inch size disinfectant wipes, which I used on the remote, headboard, TV channel guide, counter top, and heater. All of them were filthy. The TV didn’t work either. We went to the manager, who said we’d get a refund. We left, noticed the outside light flickering as we were going, and are still trying to get that refund, with nothing received yet. I’ve spent my whole working career in public health, and I believe the place was unsanitary and unsafe enough to report to the Iowa Department of Health Services. Bed bugs and disease are a real risk here. We were used to customary standards at a BestWestern and didn’t realize Sure Stay was an offshoot. In my view, the standards are sub standard at best, more like a hotel 6. They’re buying old hotels and converting them to Sure Stay. If you’re used to a BW, don’t stay at Sure Stay BW unless it’s a brand new hotel. Dirty at best.

We stayed one night, then moved across the street the next morning. They told us they often get customers switching from SureStay. The room was dusty all over, the fridge was dirty, and under the beds we found several pairs of old, smelly socks and trash. The building exterior clearly needs repairs too. This place is run down and mismanaged, and the overall incompetence was astounding. We asked for a refund, and it turned into a circus of being passed around. Best Western should close this location or redo, restore, and rehire the whole operation. I don’t usually leave reviews, but this one deserves a warning: it isn’t worth the “affordable rates.” Don’t be fooled by the pictures or okay reviews. I edited this after the response, which only made the unprofessionalism clearer. EDIT 2: The *company* has since updated the manager’s response. The first response from the manager, the one my first edit referred to, was close to “don’t believe this disgusting liar.” I hope that manager has since been removed.

For $65, it wasn’t a bad place, and I stay in a lot of hotels, so this seemed par for the course. You get what you pay for. There was the usual hair and whatever else on the pillow. The bathroom was hard to breathe in because of whatever they cleaned it with and the poor ventilation. What really irritated me was that there were only two rooms rented in the whole hotel, yet they put us right next to each other. The walls are paper thin, and the other guests were talking loudly by 6 am. There’s an entire hotel, so why put us next together?
