The listing photos give a very different impression from what we found. The grounds were strewn with trash, weeds and glass, and the pond had a broken dock and mosquitoes that bit us hundreds of times. The bikes, scuba gear and kayaks were broken, and the water was murky and shallow near shore, so there wasn't really a place to do water activities. The lounge chairs were broken too, and there were no vending machines. In the kitchen we found only a couple of plates and forks, plus a dirty microwave and toaster. We stayed two nights at the end of our trip. The place looked neglected outside, and inside it seemed like renovations had started and then been abandoned. The bathroom had open tile seams, unfinished grout, paint left unfinished, and a big hole in the shower ceiling that opened into the neighboring room's shower. We could hear them, and they could hear us. The bed was extremely noisy when we moved at night, and the AC stopped working at 5 a.m. Water from the AC was dripping onto the power box in the closet. There was no hot tub, either. They didn't tell us until after we'd paid that breakfast was no longer offered, and there was no further discount. We had a couple of coffee pods, some creamer, two towels and one roll of toilet paper in the room. It was so disappointing to arrive and see everything in such rough shape. After the response, I checked the Airbnb listing again. They say the photos are current, but I don't agree. The listing shows vending machines and clean grounds, and that's not what we saw. The room photos might be current, but the property looks nothing like the rest of the pictures. For what we paid, it wasn't worth it.

Our two-night stay had been booked and paid in full six months ahead. Six weeks later, the hotel said through Expedia that we'd asked to cancel. When I contacted them, they told me there was no availability anymore, so I can only assume they had a better offer. Don't book unless you have another plan in case they cancel. The one star is for how quickly they refunded us.

The room was huge and lovely, and the place felt peaceful with hardly anyone around. The location was perfect, too. Breakfast was quite light, more continental than a full Bed & Breakfast spread: yogurt, bagels, ham and cheese slices, mini croissants, cereal, coffee and juice. We did run out of shampoo and toilet paper, and neither was replenished. It was also hard to reach the service staff to let them know what we needed. Still, such a gem of a place. I'd recommend it 10/10!

The tide pools on the property were a highlight for my 14-year-old daughter and me. We loved exploring the marine life when the tide was low, and we also saw endangered Key Deer on the grounds several times. Those moments made a really memorable father-daughter trip. Barnacle Resort in Big Pine Key was a peaceful place to spend time together. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with great views and a fantastic shower. The property itself is lovely, and we felt at home there. We came looking for a special getaway and left with a great bonding experience. We'd love to return, and I'd recommend it for a quiet Florida Keys stay, especially for a trip with a child.

So peaceful along a private road. There are bikes, kayaks and a rowboat to use. The deer are friendly and seem to love apples, though I heard you're not supposed to feed them. Bring apples 😁
